The Importance With Early Detection of Hearing Loss in Children

The Importance With Early Detection of Hearing Loss in Children

Every parent wishes their child to be healthy and most of all happy. Children with disabilities such as hearing loss can live full and completely happy lives. However, if gone undiagnosed or ignored, a disability such as hearing loss can cause irreplaceable damage. The early years of a child's development are of the utmost importance. It is a time when they learn language, understanding, cognitive skills, and motor skills. If your child shows signs of hearing loss, make sure to have him or her see a specialist, so the issue does not worsen.

Hearing loss is not defined as complete deafness. There are multiple levels of hearing loss, from slight to profound, depending on the frequencies as which they can hear sounds. Issues with hearing can either be environmental, come from infection or disease, or most commonly genetic. No matter what the cause of the problem is, it needs to get tested so the specialist can help you take the right steps to improve your child's development.

Many states require that newborns be tested for hearing issues within the first hours of their birth. This does not mean that problems cannot develop later, so it is important that parents constantly be on the lookout for signs and symptoms related to hearing loss. Early signs can be detected by parents that can alert to some sort of hearing issues. If parents notice any of these symptoms, they should immediately make an appointment to see a specialist.

Signs for children's hearing problems include not being able to recognize a parent's voice, consistent sounds, or even to his or her name. Children begin recognizing a parent's voice from after the first few months of birth and his or her name soon after that. If still a child does not acknowledge frequently heard voices or sounds, it might be a sign of hearing problems.

During development, a child's attentiveness can also become a sign of hearing problems. Children with hearing problems often become easily frustrated, as it is difficult for them to communicate. If they are having trouble understanding you, asking for things repeatedly, or constantly questioning what you are trying to communicate, there might be an underlying issue.

Speech development is an important step within all children's developmental process. There is of course no strict schedule that all children should adhere to. Even brothers and sisters take different amounts of time to develop cognitive skills. However, if a child's speech development is long delayed, there might be cause for concern. Unclear speech can also be a sign of hearing problems. If you suspect any of these signs occurring in your child, it is better to be safe than sorry. Have your child tested by a hearing aid specialist just to be sure. It can make all the difference in the world with your child's development.

If a child does have hearing impairment, a hearing aid can be of great assistance during development. Many public school systems offer special education to assist with the development and education of hearing impaired children. Hearing aids can afford your child the best opportunity for a normal development for those with hearing problems.

Learn More About Mixed Hearing Loss

Learn More About Mixed Hearing Loss

Mixed hearing loss occurs when the inner as well as the middle ear get affected. As such, it can be defined as a combination of two losses which include conductive and sensorineural. In most cases, the loss starts with sensorineural permanent loss and from there, the other one takes place. Fortunately, identifying this type is not half as difficult when compared to other types. It is important to note that once this occurs, the situation is only aggravated. More importantly, the appropriate tests have to be carried out in order to determine if this is really the case.

One thing that has to be noted is that conductive part can be treated with ease once it is noted early enough. However, sensorineural cannot be reversed for the simple reason it is permanent. This means that it cannot be treated whether it is by medication, surgery or any other procedure. In addition to this, it is important to note that conductive also known as the middle ear infection can be affected as a result of accumulation of fluid.

There are some medications which are designed to treat this and in the event they fail, the fluid has to be drained out of the ear. In this regard, the first part that would have to be treated is the adenoids. This is because it is known to collect a large percentage of the fluid found in the middle ear. As a matter of fact, in most cases, it is advisable to have this part checked as often as possible.

At this point, it is important to state that this condition should be identified with immediacy since it is the only way to prevent the situation from becoming more aggravated. This condition affects people from different age groups and for this reason, if you note changes in the speech of the individual, it is important to consult a doctor immediately in order to ensure that the problem is solved.

Some of the factors leading to mixed hearing loss include family inheritance, premature birth or other traumatizing incidences during birth and jaundice among others. It is also important to state that it can be caused by aging. Before choosing a solution to address this condition, it is important to weigh your options and do some research in order to ensure that you get the best solution.

Can a Tinnitus Hearing Aid Help the Symptoms?

Can a Tinnitus Hearing Aid Help the Symptoms?

If you feel a ringing sensation in your ear a little too often, it's probably time for you to use a tinnitus hearing aid. Can hearing aids help tinnitus? Definitely. You can use this device even if you are not deaf. The usual associated deafness is also known as sensorineural hearing loss in scientific terms.

A 2008 study actually estimated that 10 to 15 percent of people in the US most likely experience a persistent occurrence of tinnitus. Tinnitus occurs when you feel like there is a ringing sensation in your ears or when internal noises are seemingly being heard. It's hard to have tinnitus because it affects your concentration.

In relation to this, around 90% of those who are known to experience tinnitus also have a certain degree of hearing loss. Hearing loss ringing is what often occurs when there's too much of the ringing or buzzing sensation happening in your ear.

The tinnitus hearing aid works by successfully masking the sound which is typically being perceived a high-pitched sound that is shrilly in nature. A tinnitus hearing aid is different from the usual because it also uses pitch and volume in order to relieve the patient from the discomfort of tinnitus.

It also makes use of a masking sound, sometimes similar to that of running water, which is found rather comforting by the majority of the sufferers.

Researches also show that around 20% of most tinnitus patients experience major relief with the use of a this device. Moreover, those whose tinnitus case were treated also got their hearing impairments treated as well.

Without tinnitus hearing aid treatment, people who suffer such illness may eventually experience major psychological problems that can lead to social rejection. Their job performance can also be compromised. Even the person's personal safety can be affected.

Helping Someone (Like Me) Who Has a Hearing Loss

Helping Someone (Like Me) Who Has a Hearing Loss

Several months ago I was diagnosed with a hearing loss in both ears. Now I wear two hearing aids and they have improved my life. I can hear whole conversations, not just snatches, and pick up on subtleties. Most of the time my hearing aids work well, but they don't work as well if there's lots of background noise.

Even with hearing aids I can misunderstand conversation. One snowy morning my husband looked out the window and called, "Deer have been on our front steps." I heard the sentence as "Beer is on our front steps." "Why would anyone put beer on our front steps?" I asked. Though the conversation didn't make any sense, it did make us laugh.

You may have a relative or friend who has a hearing loss. Communicating with this person can be difficult, but you can do things to foster communication. Before you say anything move closer to this person, within two or three feet. To get the person's attention you may have to say their name.

SPEAK IN A NORMAL VOICE. Shouting at a person who wears a hearing aid may cause the aid to turn off automatically. Besides, nobody likes to be yelled at. Of course, there are times when talking loudly is the only thing that works.

LOOK AT ME WHEN YOU ARE SPEAKING. A person who wears a hearing aid may still rely on lip reading. Seeing your lips form words, phrases, and sentences helps me to understand what you are saying. I can see the difference between the letter d and the letter b and won't mistake beer for deer.

PLEASE SPEAK SLOWLY. Several of my friends are so smart they speak at double speed. I can hardly keep up with what they are saying. If you speak normally, or even a bit slower, I can understand you better. I also feel like you really care about me.

SPEAK CLEARLY AND PRONOUNCE ALL OF THE SYLLABLES. People who speak fast often slur their words. It can be hard for those of us who have a hearing loss to understand these people. On the other hand, if you speak clearly and pronounce all of the syllables you will be understood.

EXPERIMENT WITH PITCH. Some people have a high frequency loss, others have a low frequency loss, or something in between. I have high frequency loss, so a low pitch works best for me. Ask the person you are speaking with which pitch works best for her or him.

USE SHORT SENTENCES. It's easier for a hearing impaired person to track short sentences. You can still have long conversations and tell long, involved stories, but please use short sentences when you speak.

REPHRASE IF NECESSARY. My father-in-law is profoundly hard of hearing. He has a hearing aid and a cochlear implant. Still, he is unable to hear many of the words I say. I've tried many things, such as moving closer to him and speaking loudly, but rephrasing works best. Believe me, I've learned lots of synonyms.

SIGNAL A TOPIC CHANGE. Telling me when the topic has changed helps me to track conversation. My husband also uses a hearing aid so I come right out and say, "I'm changing the topic from ________ to ________."

DON'T TALK WHEN YOU ARE LEAVING THE ROOM. People who have a hearing loss miss miss key words if you speak to him or her when you are turned away or moving away. Though it has taken us months, my husband I have learned to speak face-to-face.

ASK "DID YOU HEAR WHAT I SAID?" This question is a question of caring. Don't be afraid to ask it if you think the person you're speaking to has missed a key point. From experience, I can tell you the person will be grateful.

Last, and most important, remember that hearing impaired people aren't intellectually impaired. We're the same people as we were before, tuned into life and raring to go!

Caring For Elders - Top 10 Tips For Communicating With the Hearing Impaired

Caring For Elders - Top 10 Tips For Communicating With the Hearing Impaired

If you have an elder that is one of the 23 percent of folks with some degree of hearing loss, you may want to try these top ten tips when trying to communicate with them. There are many things that can frustrate an elder, but not being able to understand what someone is saying to them due to hearing loss is right at the top of the list.

1. Sit or stand within three feet and face the person

Don't attempt to communicate between rooms.

2. Try to talk to the "good side"

Many elders have one ear that is the "good ear" while the other has a greater degree of hearing loss. Find out which ear is the "best" ear and try to speak with them from that side.

3. Always keep your hands away from your face

Having your hands in front of your face can distort your words, making them more difficult to understand.

4. Don't eat or chew while speaking with your elder

As with hands in front of your face, talking while chewing can also distort your words.

5. Make sure your face is in the light

This helps with lip reading, which many with hearing issues become very good at over time.

6. Know that some words are more difficult to hear that other words

Even for those without hearing loss, some words are more difficult to understand. It can be very hard to distinguish between c,d,e,t and v.

7. Enunciation!

Speak slowly and clearly. Running words together can make it very hard to understand what you are saying. Expressions like howzitgoing, or watchdyado taday can be tough for many with hearing loss to decipher.

8. Paraphrasing

When your elder doesn't hear or understand what you've said, don't continue to repeat the same thing over and over again. Try paraphrasing and they will likely understand. By continually repeating something that isn't heard or understood, your elder's frustration will escalate quickly.

9. When sitting in a group, seat your elder where they can see everyone

Sitting at the head of the table at dinner time is a great way to accomplish this.

10. Make sure your elder is wearing their glasses if they wear glasses

This goes back to lip reading as discussed in number 5. If they are wearing their glasses, it will make this process much easier.

Five Ways to Prevent Hearing Loss So You Can Hear When You're 80

Five Ways to Prevent Hearing Loss So You Can Hear When You're 80

Over 30 million Americans experience some hearing loss. Close to one-third of Americans over the age of 75 have some age-related hearing loss according to the Mayo Clinic. The main reasons for hearing loss over time are prolonged exposure to loud noise and heredity. While nothing can be done about some causes of hearing loss, there are steps you can take to prevent or reduce hearing loss from other causes.

Here are five things you can do:

One of the easiest and best things you can do is to wear ear protection. Earplugs can be purchased over the counter for most activities. Shooters can purchase earplugs from gun dealers which are made specifically for shooting. An airtight seal gives the best protection. On-the-job hearing damage can be prevented or reduced by the use of ear protection. Earplugs can also prevent further damage if your hearing has already been damaged. Also, take breaks away from the noise. Alternating loud and quiet activities can help prevent hearing loss. Turn down the music! MP3 players are especially popular today, but watch the decibel level. Loud music over time, especially with headphones, can be very damaging to your hearing. MP3 players can produce sounds at 130 decibels, which is well into the danger range. If you're using headphones and the person next to you can hear what you're listening to, the noise is too loud. So turn down the volume so that you can still enjoy your music when you are 80 years old. Avoid loud environments if possible. If you can't avoid them altogether, at least move away as much as possible. At a concert, sit away from the speakers. At home, turn down the volume. Keep sharp objects away from your ears. Visit a doctor or a specialist. Have a hearing test to see where you're at.

Types Of Hearing Aids - Making The Best Choice

Types Of Hearing Aids - Making The Best Choice

Why I Need To Know Different Types Of Hearing Aids:

The loss of hearing ability has been regarded as a very serious impairment just a few years ago but the modern age has developed a very efficient solution to this issue, you can very easily over come the minor or moderate hearing loss problem using different types of hearing aids. If your physician has prescribed you using a hearing aid, you should have already enough information enabling you to select a suitable instrument from different types of hearing aids? Your audiologist would usually help you in making this important decision; which kind of hearing aid equipment will be suitable for you; however, it is only you who will make the final choice that out of different types of hearing aids which one would best match your requirement. So the knowledge of different types of is very important before actually buying any hearing instrument.

Different Types Of Hearing Aids

Exploiting the advances in technology and research, different companies have been producing different types of hearings aids; there are however, three basic types of hearing aids. These include

1. In the canal (ITC)

2. In the ear (ITE) &

3. Behind the ear (BTE) types of hearing aids.

These different types of hearing aids primarily vary in terms of various methodologies of production but also in terms of different sizes, shapes and quality. Let us discuss about each type one by one.

Behind The Ear Hearing Devices (BTE)

The BTE are the oldest types of the hearing aids. The BTE as the name indicates are employed behind the ear with a wire that connects to an earmold, which is worn inside the outer part of the ear. A hard plastic case embodies the electronic equipment, and sound is transmitted through the wire into the earmold. BTE is usually prescribed for hearing impaired people of all ages, and can be used at all levels of hearing loss; from minor hearing defect to very serious hearing losses.

An other sort of BTE has been introduced quite recently, usually known as the open fit hearing aid. In these types of hearing aids the plastic case still rests behind the ear; but instead of an earmold like in older types of BTE, a small tubule is introduced inside the ear canal. The open fit aids have been red by many users as it is observed that open fit aids have bettered considerably the sound quality.

In the ear types of hearing aids (ITE)

Now we shall discuss about ITE's. These hearing devices fit into the outer ear but are usually not appropriate for children because they have be replaced oftenly as the child grows. The electronic components of these devices are completely enclosed in a hard plastic casing which rests in the outer part of the ear. An other salient feature of these devices is that they can als be coupled with telecoil which enables for the user very comfortable use of the telephone.

In The Canal Hearing Devices (ITC) And CIC's

The third types of hearing aids are the ITE devices. ITC's are customized devices specially manufactured to suite the exact size and shape of the user's ear canal. A very recent type ITC is a CIC usually known as completely in canal device. These hearing instruments are apparently hidden inside the ear canal. These types of hearing aids are not however prescribed for very serious hearing impairment, because though, these devices are aesthetically quite preferable but owing to their small size their amplification power is not very high . ITC's are also not advisable for children. There are many types of hearing aids tailored specifically for your needs to enable you to hear the sounds you would never like to miss no matter your hearing loss is severe or mild.

Important Tidbits to Know About Hearing Loss and Fixes

Important Tidbits to Know About Hearing Loss and Fixes

Ironically, hearing loss is an issue you don't hear a lot about. Other sensory organs like your eyes and skin tend to get much more attention than your ears, but your ears can end up affecting your quality of life like nothing else. That's why it's important to know a few things about them and how you can ensure they remain as functional as possible for years go come.

Without your ears and the sense of hearing that's associated with them, communicating with others would be much more difficult. The way you interact with others could very well be the number one determiner of how happy you end up being in life. A couple of examples will easily demonstrate this. If your ears are not up to snuff, your relationship with friends and colleagues could suffer. If friends have trouble having regular conversations with you, they are likely to seek the company of others instead. Ultimately, you could end up feeling alienated, which could lead to depression. If your colleagues have trouble communicating with you in a fluid manner, productivity at work could suffer and your boss could take note. You might end up being skipped over when it comes to promotions and bonuses because of your issues with hearing loss.

Now that you see it can have a profound effect on your life, you have to take steps to prevent it from happening in the first place. The great thing about such loss is that it's almost entirely preventable. It's mostly a matter of avoiding the habits that lead to it, though that tends to be much easier said than done. It must be noted though that to a certain extent age itself will affect your hearing, but bad habits could speed up the process greatly. Take care to minimize or completely avoid the following if at all possible: listening to music at high volumes with headphones, blasting your stereo in your car, working around loud industrial machinery without protection, driving your car with your windows down, frequently attending noisy dance or music venues, and riding a motorcycle without protection, just to name a few activities.

The only way to objectively know if you are currently suffering from hearing loss is to have a test performed on you by a qualified professional. Most people are subjective about their own ears and friends and family may try to sugar-coat a loved one's ailments. A proper test will just let you know the facts. The best part about one is that they can end up being completely free of charge. Hearing aid companies will often test your ears for free in the hopes that you will do business with them in the future. There will be no charge and no commitment. They're just hoping that their good-will gesture will convince you that they're out to help first, and make money second. If you should happen to need a couple of hearings aids to get your ears back in line, they'd be right there to help.

Know Your Best Hearing Aid Style Before You Buy One

Know Your Best Hearing Aid Style Before You Buy One

There are many styles of hearing aids, and modern aid styles vary greatly, as do prices. In this article we will describe for you, all the basic styles, and this should mean that you will be able to select the best for you when you speak to the hearing aid company's salesperson or representative.

There were until recently 4 basic styles of hearing aids, but we now think that there are five. There are variations on the basic styles, but they are quite easily categorised as follows:-

- Behind the Ear (BTE) Hearing Aids

- Full Shell Hearing Aid

- Half Shell Hearing Aid

- Canal Hearing Aid

- Completely-In-the-Canal

We will now describe them all one by one, starting with the cheapest and largest and ending with the smallest and most expensive.

Behind the Ear (BTE) Hearing Aids - also known as Postaural

These instruments were the first type developed after the original battery hearing aids which requireed a bulky battery and amplifier unit, which was kept in a pocket. They are the largest aid type commonly available and they do have the advantage of being suitable for those with all kinds of hearing loss from mild to severe.

The aim of technological development has been to reduce size in recent years, while improving clarity and volume.

BTE aids are the aid style most commonly provided free issue or with a subsidy, by health authorities worldwide.

Full Shell or 'Concha' Hearing Aids

These aids largely fill the ear, and do not require straps behind the ear. This makes them less visible, and less in the way when playing sports.

This style of aid is suitable for most hearing impairment types, although due to the reduced size of the hearing aid the amount of volume the instrument can provide is less than for the larger behind the ear type.

This is both the largest and the most economical style of in-the-ear hearing aid, although it is also less cumbersome and more comfortable than most behind the ear aids.

However, immediately the aid goes into the ear, the instrument becomes less visible, and cosmetically they are much liked by younger more image conscious users.

Half Shell or Half Concha Hearing Aids

This type only fills part of the ear, and for an energy source it uses smaller batteries than for the behind the ear types. It is smaller and more visually acceptable than a full concha hearing aid. All that can be seen in normal use is a small skin coloured blob in the users ear

Many people go for this style of hearing aid, on the basis that it has good style, has few compromises in its design, and has a very good performance and appearance. However, reduced size does not come with any downsides, other than this style is not usually found to be suitable for severe hearing impairment.

Canal or Mini-Canal Hearing Aids

'Canal' hearing aids rely on the fact that they are inserted into the ear canal, and stay in that position throughout. An unavoidable sacrifice is the small volume (output power) reduction that has to be made to achieve size reduction, also some features found in larger hearing aids may be lost. But many will make this trade-off happily in order to ensure that this style of aids are really small. A small skin coloured button over the ear canal is all that will be visible to the onlooker.

For those concerned about their good looks, these aid types are an excellent compromise between cost and functionality, and this aid type is very suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss patients.

Completely-In-the-Canal or CIC Hearing Aids

Now we are almost at the end of the line fo technological development. We have arrived at the smallest most expensive and cutting-edge hearing aid style which we think exists. We understand that the CIC aid style is suitable for a wide range of mild to moderate hearing loss patients.

There is very little to see to alert others to the fact that you are wearing a hearing aid with one of these. It is easily also the most concealed type and favoured hearing aid style of all of the model types available at present.

Many also say that the smaller the hearing aid, the more it is likely to be suitable for sporting lifestyles. In the end you make your own choice, and we hope that now you have read this article you will do it more quickly, and with better results, than you would have done without having read this.

Hearing Loss in Children: The Importance of Early Detection

Hearing Loss in Children: The Importance of Early Detection

Hearing loss is a condition that usually affects elderly but children can also acquired this condition. Loss of hearing can greatly affect children, if left undetected and untreated it will affect the child's speech development, social and learning skills.

There are two principal type of hearing loss in children, it can be congenital and acquired. These losses may be sensorineural, conductive or combination of two.
There are many possible causes of congenital loss. Pregnancy related causes like premature birth could cause hearing loss because the auditory system is not yet fully developed. Rubella, syphilis, Cytomegalovirus can affect the fetus and relate to progressive hearing loss, even mental retardation and blindness. Ototoxic medication, which was taken during pregnancy, could also cause hearing loss so avoid taking medicine during preganancy and if it cannot be avoided, consult a doctor before taking any medication. Hereditary or genetic factor can also be a factor, usually the parents are not really suffering from loss of hearing but they can be carriers that transmit the condition to their children.

Hearing loss could also be acquired if a child got meningitis, measles or other viral infection. One way to avoid viral infection in infant is breastfeeding. Breastfed babies have stronger immune system. Neglected middle ear infections can also cause loss, and damage eardrum due to excessive noise like loud music causes damage and eventual loss, this is usually the cause of hearing loss in teenagers. Head injury cause by physical trauma and taking ototoxic medicine can also cause this condition.

Normally, hearing in young children is temporary, and caused by earwax or middle-ear infections. With proper treatment and sometimes surgery this condition can be cured. If the condition is permanent, hearing aid can be used.

For children early detection is important so its regular practice in most hospitals to perform hearing tests for babies shortly after delivery. There are two tests that are available: Otoacoustic emissions (OAE) and auditory brain stem response (ABR). The primary purpose of otoacoustic emission (OAE) tests is to determine cochlear status, specifically hair cell function. The ABR test measures the reaction of the parts of a child's nervous system that affect hearing. An ABR test is often ordered if a newborn fails the hearing screening test given in the hospital shortly after birth, or for older children if there is a suspicion of hearing loss that was not confirmed through more conventional hearing tests.

For parents there are noticeable physical symptoms that your child is suffering from hearing loss. If your child turn up the volume of TV or radio too high, most of the time respond inappropriately to questions or does not even reply when you call him/her, low academic performance, delay development in speech, could not follow or understand simple instruction and most of the time complain of headache, ear pain or head noise or tinnitus.

These signs does not automatically means that your child has hearing problem but just to make sure to get the correct diagnosis consult your pediatrician if you see one of the symptoms above.

Hearing Problems

Hearing Problems

Our ears have two main functions to hear and maintain balance. Throughout our life span, the hearing function gets worn out and less effective. It is a fact, one in three people over age of 65 has a hearing problem and 50% of seniors more than the age of 75 also have hearing problems. But you don't need to put up with it. Find professional help and find the best treatment for you. It may be be that a simple, modern hearing aid is exactly right for you. Hearing loss is often due to over-exposure to high volume sound, heredity or both.

The indications you are suffering from loss of hearing is pretty easy to detect:

A) You will notice that everybody sounds muffled when they are talking.
B) It is challenging to decipher their words easily.
C) You have to ask for others to speak more slowly or loudly.
D) You always seem to need to increase the volume on your home entertainment or TV set.

Should you suffer from any of the above problems it is quite likely that you will have a yearning to retreat from personal interaction and make every effort to side step social settings. In effect you are embarrassed by your loss of hearing.

Nearly all hearing difficulties result from impairment to the cochlea ( a coiled construction in the inner ear accountable for hearing ). This disability is commonly an outcome of excessive exposure to loud noises of 85 decibel or more. A decibel is the unit used to rate degrees of loudness and is Frequently shortened to dB.

Other frequent causes of hearing problems are:

A) Infections of the ear
B) Abnormal boney growths.
C) Tumors in the outer or middle ear.
D) Ruptured ear drums.

Other non-age interrelated causes for deafness are Auditory Neuropathy, Meniere's Disease, Noise Ostosclerosis and Usher's Syndrome.

There are three fundamental types of hearing difficulty:

Type # 1 - Conductive Hearing Loss

This happens if sound is not transmitted successfully to the middle ear, which may well be caused by fluid, earwax, infection, foreign matter or abnormality of the middle or outer ear.

Type # 2 - Sensorineural Hearing Loss

This condition happens after there has been some sort of impairment to the inner ear ( cochlea ) or to the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the brain. Disease, birth injury, drugs or genetic syndromes can be other causes of Sensorineural hearing loss. Further causes may well include noise exposure, viruses, head injury, tumors and a persons age.

Folk suffering from this type of hearing difficulty could show a lack of speech comprehension.

Type # 3 - Mixed Hearing Loss

On occasion a person may well suffer from conductive hearing loss along with a Sensorineural hearing loss. This type of problem is recognized as mixed hearing loss.

A person can exhibit a loss of hearing in one ear or the other ear. The degree of the severity of hearing impairment in each ear may well be equal or disparate. The loss of hearing can either present suddenly or over an extended interval of time.

Some folks suffer with hearing losses that fluctuate and their problem may well go downhill or get better erratically. This is typically caused by an ear infection causing conductive hearing impairment.

If you suspect you experience a hearing difficulty, you must consult your health specialist to acquire a qualified diagnosis and appropriate care for your problem. Treatment may be very simple or may require the fitting of a modern hearing aid.

Introduction to Different Types of Hearing Loss - Causes and Treatments

Introduction to Different Types of Hearing Loss - Causes and Treatments

Hearing loss is characterized by the inability to hear sounds coming from the environment. Studies say that 1 in 10 people are affected by loss of hearing to different degrees. The degree of hearing loss means the extent of damage. It can range from mild to profound, and can be helped by the use of devices designed to enhance a person's ability to hear.

Hearing Loss Types:

When the bones of the middle ear, the incus, malleus, and stapes (the smallest bones in the body) do not receive sound from the external ear, this is called Conductive Hearing Loss. This results in the inability to hear faint sounds.

Damage to the inner ear, namely the cochlea, results in permanent hearing loss. This is called Sensorineural Hearing Loss. The cochlea contains the auditory nerve that sends electrical impulses to the brain. Damage to this nerve prevents impulses from reaching the brain for interpretation.

A combination of the two above hearing deficits is called Mixed Hearing Loss, and is due damage of the outer, middle, and inner ear.

When there is an abnormality in the brain, such as a brain tumor, or a non-malignant tumor in the auditory canal, That causes sound to not be sent to the brain, it is called Central Hearing Loss.

There is also unilateral loss of hearing, meaning that hearing deficit is located in just one ear.

How Hearing Is Lost?

There are a variety of reasons that causes one to not hear sounds. These causes include:

Loud sudden noises, such as an explosion or airbag deployment
Family history (Genetics)
Repeated ear infections
Chronic illness such as diabetes
Puncture of the eardrum
Excessive Ear wax
Blockages such as ear wax, fluid, or mechanical obstruction
Lesions (tumors)
Trauma to the head
Viruses
Constant exposure to loud noises

Loss of Hearing is measured in degrees or severity and is diagnosed by a series of hearing tests which tells the type, degree, and location of the hearing deficit.

There are several testing procedures performed by your health care provider to determine one's loss of hearing and the extent of damage. These tests include:

Weber's test utilizes the tuning fork
Rinne test - compares air and bone conduction
Audiogram - measures hearing levels
Speech testing

Treatment:

Treatment of any existing disease
Hearing aid
Surgery

What are the Surgical procedures for Loss of Hearing:

Myringotomy: A small incision is made in the ear drum and a tiny tube is inserted to drain the the ear of a build up of fluid.

Stapedectomy: Surgical manipulation of the stapes bone or complete replacement is performed.

Tympanoplasty and Mastoid surgery: Reconstructs of the ear drum, and the removal of the mastoid bone and any disease it contains.

Translabyrinthine surgery: Is the removal of acoustic neuromas (tumors).

Middle Fossa and Retrosigmoid: Is the removal of small tumors

If you believe you have some type of hearing loss, consulting with a hearing professional for testing, diagnosis, and treatment will help you begin hearing the sounds coming from your environment again, and participating in the activities you enjoy.

Hearing Loss - Definition, Risk Factors and Treatments

Hearing Loss - Definition, Risk Factors and Treatments

For most people, hearing loss is something that gradually occurs as they age. This condition is very common especially in people who are above the age of 65. Some of the factors that cause the condition include exposure to a lot of noise and heredity. Earwax blockage can also make it difficult for the ears to conduct sounds. It is not possible to reverse this condition but there are various things that you can do in order to improve hearing.

There are various symptoms of this condition including poor quality of sounds and speech, difficulty in understanding words in noisy places and withdrawing from conversations because you do not seem to hear what people are saying.

As soon as you realize that you may be suffering from hearing loss, you need to contact your doctor. This is important because it can help to prevent any further deterioration.

In some cases, the condition can occur if there is damage to your inner ear. This damage usually occurs if the nerve cells and hairs in your cochlea wear out because of exposing yourself to a lot of noise. If there is a history of this condition in your family, you are more prone to developing it.

If you have an abnormal growth or infection in your ear, you are also more likely to suffer from the condition. If your eardrum raptures, you can also suffer from it.

People who work in environments that are noisy also tend to suffer from the condition especially if they do not take any measures to reduce the noise they are exposed to.

Some medications are also known to cause this condition therefore it is important to find out what the side effects are before taking them.

Illnesses like meningitis that cause high fever is also known to cause this condition.

If this condition is left untreated, it can have some adverse effects especially among older people. Some of the problems that they can suffer from include anxiety and depression. It is important to get treatment before the condition interferes with the quality of your life. When you are preparing to see a doctor, make sure you list down all the symptoms that you are suffering from. You should also make sure you have all your medical information during your visit. Before you get treatment, a doctor will carry out a variety of tests.

Acoustic Neuroma Hearing Loss - Strategies For Coping With One Sided Deafness

Acoustic Neuroma Hearing Loss - Strategies For Coping With One Sided Deafness

Often one of the symptoms of acoustic neuroma is single sided hearing loss. Depending on the tumor size, type of treatment and other factors, single sided deafness or near deafness can be one of the outcomes of treatment.

If you are living with one sided hearing loss or deafness, you may be familiar with some of the following scenarios.

You are walking down the street, or across campus, or through a parking lot. A friendly voice is calling your name. Your look around but can't see who it is. They continue to cheerfully call out, "Over here!" Each time you ask where, they again call out, "Over here!"

You are in a noisy restaurant at a work related meeting. You can't hear the person beside you on the side of your deaf ear. You can hear some of what the person on your other side is saying. You can hear some of what the person across from you is saying. You can't hear your boss, who called the meeting. You hope you aren't missing any important information

You are at a social get together. Not everyone there knows you well or knows about your single sided deafness. You are doing your best to participate and to fit in. You are picking up the gist of the conversation with those right across from you or right next to your hearing ear. In fact, you are doing a bit of grinning and nodding, and making a few comments here and there, which you hope are relevant.  You happen to look to the side of your deaf ear, and see that the person sitting beside you is moving their lips. They seem to be talking to you. You have no idea how long they have been speaking. They do not seem to notice that you have not heard a single word.

The following tips are being offered to help you cope:

*Use visual cues and knowledge of your environment to figure out where a voice is coming from.

*Use seating arrangements to your advantage. With experimenting, you will eventually figure out the best places to sit in a group setting.

*Turn to face a person sitting on your deaf side, even though it feels awkward at first.

*Communicate your needs to others. Be easy on them if they forget. Just tell them again.

*Be easy on yourself. It is not your fault this happened. You owe it to yourself to speak up so others can help to include you.

*Have a sense of humor. The best laid plans are bound to go wrong, and it would behoove you to learn to laugh about it.

*Relax! In most social settings, most people won't hear most of what is said. You can always catch up with people one on one, later.

*Have a daily relaxation routine, such as breathing exercises, yoga, or walking. It will go a long way toward helping you cope and put things in perspective.

I hope these tips have been helpful to you. I wish you the best on your acoustic neuroma journey.

Diseases That Can Cause Hearing Loss

Diseases That Can Cause Hearing Loss

There are many different types of diseases that can cause hearing loss. The diseases are usually during the childhood years, but teens and adults can get them if proper vaccination as a child is not given. The hearing loss may be immediate or delayed, depending on the disease and the severity of the case.

The first disease that can cause hearing loss is rubella. Rubella is also called the German measles. The measles are usually a mild disease and pass with no complications other than annoyance to the affected person. However, without a vaccine, a child or even a pregnant mother can have a serious case of the illness which damages the developing audio system. Normally, the rubella that causes problems is a congenital form, which causes auditory defects of the ears and usually deafness occurs.

The next disease that can cause hearing loss is meningitis. Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes. There are different types of meningitis, such as viral or bacterial, and some are severe while others aren't so dangerous. In severe cases, the membranes surrounding the brain stem swell and cause abnormal pressure, resulting in hearing loss which may be temporary or permanent, depending on how long the membranes are swollen and if any damage is done to the nerves. If damage is done to the nerves, then it can never be repaired. If swelling goes down quickly, then damage may be restored.

A third type of disease that can cause hearing loss is CMV, or cytomegalovirus. CMV is a virus that belongs to the herpes family and affects the salivary glands. In severe cases, especially those that aren't treated, varying degrees of loss to the hearing occurs. Most often hearing loss develops when the pregnant mother has the disease and passes it to the fetus, who is not protected.

Another disease causing hearing loss is called glue ear. Glue ear is when the middle ear is infected and inflamed. When the inflammation and infection are not treated, it can cause a buildup of pus and when it ruptures, the pus will ooze out of the ear. Untreated, the infection causes damage to the inner ear and the ear drum. Glue ear most commonly affects those under seven years of age, but occasionally adults can have it too.

There is no way to reverse hearing loss from a disease. Prevention is the best way to stave off any type of hearing loss. Prevention means not only getting your infants and children vaccinated, but having the female receive the vaccinations before becoming pregnant. A pregnant mother is vulnerable to diseases, and the fetus she carries is even more so, because they haven't had a chance to build any immunity or get vaccines. Most of these diseases are preventable with a simple shot, received as an infant in one or two visits. If you don't get the shots when they are scheduled, your doctor can get you caught up very easily in one or two visits.

The Sinusitis Hearing Connection

The Sinusitis Hearing Connection

Do you suffer from hearing loss or ear pains when your sinuses flare-up? It's not your imagination. There is a connection between your sinuses and ears. If you suffer from sinusitis hearing problems, here's the information that should help you out.

The Eustachian Tube

The ears and the throat are connected through the Eustachian tube. The nose and the sinuses are also connected to the throat. If infections from the sinuses travel through the nose and throat, it can reach the Eustachian tube and start to affect your ears.

This isn't as uncommon as you think. If you suffer from flare-ups, you would've noticed the ease with which the infection can spread to your nose and throat. In fact, having a runny nose and a sore throat are two of the most common symptoms related to a flare-up.

Infection of the Eustachian Tube

The Eustachian tube is used by the body to equalize the pressure inside and outside the ear. This is very important for the inner ear to do its job of processing sound, which are vibrations in the air. If an infection reaches this tube, it can swell shut or get blocked by mucus. This can lead to further problems because the mucus, the fluid, and even the air inside the ears are trapped.

Middle Ear Infections

With the mucus and the fluids trapped in the middle or inner ear, the area becomes very favorable for bacterial growth. This can lead to middle ear infections that can sometimes cause hearing loss. Some people actually go through complete hearing loss in at least one ear. This is temporary most of the time. However, the buildup of fluids and air pressure inside the middle ear can cause permanent damage. Due to the high pressures, your ear drums can actually rupture.

Solutions

Should you suffer from sinusitis hearing problems, you'd want to get to the sinusitis first. Usually the problem can go away without medical treatment but if you don't treat the flare up that led to the ear infections, you can suffer from repeated bouts of hearing problems.

In getting to your sinus problem, you should consult your doctor to get a proper diagnosis on what you actually have. If you can get to the cause, the treatment should be much easier. Also, you can conduct some self-care techniques like drinking plenty of fluids and resting to help your body repair itself and clear up the excess mucus that could cause the blockages in the nose and throat.

If your ears start to hurt and you fear that you may be suffering from an ear infection, it is again best to consult your doctor. Again, most of the time the problem will go away on its own especially if you've treated the flare-ups, but it is always a good idea to be sure. Some middle ear infections require antibiotics and other meds because the area inside the middle ear has become very favorable to bacteria and bacterial growths are rampaging inside.

It is very important that you consult your doctor before attempting remedies to this kind of ear problem. Also, do not self medicate if you don't know the cause of the problem. Misuse of drugs can lead to further problems.

Allergies and Hearing

Allergies and Hearing

When you think about health and nutrition, it's important to be aware of how various foodstuffs affect your wellbeing.

It's quite amazing just how many allergens there are in a well balanced diet. Things like gluten in wheat breads and cereals, lactose in uncultured dairy products, mono sodium glutamate in tomatoes, - I'm sure you can think of dozens - that can turn your life upside down.

Allergy has been called the great masquerader because it can contribute to and mimic many illnesses that we do not typically associated with allergy.

I have a particular interest in issues surrounding hearing, and in the fact that there may be allergies involved with some conductive hearing losses.

Conductive Hearing Loss results from problems in the middle ear, known as Otitis Media.

Middle ear infection is extremely common and very few children never experience it. Otitis Media can be painful, but is usually short term & the Conductive Hearing Loss is temporary.

Otisis Media begins with an ear ache, swelling of the membrane in the eustachian tube (resulting in blockage of the tube that normally aerates the middle ear) and results in a build up of fluid behind the ear drum. It is the pressure of the fluid that causes the pain and it is the fluid that decreases the amount of sound being conducted through the middle ear that causes the hearing loss.

As I said before Otitis Media is extremely common and most children will experience it once or twice in their lives.

When Otitis Media becomes recurrent, there is enormous cause for concern. Not only because the child is miserable and maybe in considerable pain but because the child's normal hearing becomes distorted.

Young children are not fluent language speakers although they are learning at a phenomenal rate. The experience of having a fluctuating hearing level as a result of Otitis Media in childhood can result in a life time of difficulties. There is research to suggest that the language pathways in the brain form differently. Some children who have suffered from recurrent Otitis Media have serious problems with understanding what is going on around them, that causes major social and academic problems at school.

Sadly the repercussions of Otitis Media and Fluctuating Conductive Hearing Loss in childhood is generally underestimated. After all it only last a short while, the hearing loss is only slight or moderate, it's all temporary - Right?

Wrong!

For many children life goes on wonderfully, BUT for some, early Otitis Media leaves them with lifelong difficulties and even an unrecognized permanent disability that they carry with them. And they may fail at school, and socially and get into trouble. A small hearing loss but a major loss in Quality of Life.

Some years ago I read of the work being done by Dr Michael A Schmidt on ear infections in children. He pointed out that in one study that allergic children had double the chance of suffering from Otitis Media as non allergic children.

The main allergens from his findings were food (with dairy products at the top of the list) and airborne irritants (with cigarette smoke topping the list).

It was with this in mind that I met up with some friends I had not seen for some time. Sadly their new son had recurrent Otitis Media. They were aware of my concerns about language development and had been conscientiously taking their son to doctors and specialists who were giving him vast quantities of antibiotics. (we'll save antibiotics for another time!)

He was eighteen months old and had never slept through the night and had often been very miserable. They were quite distraught. I suggested they talk to the Otorhinolaryngologist (Ear Nose & Throat Specialist) about the possibility of a food allergy. The specialist simply dismissed the idea as nonsense.

Later my friends and I talked about what the specialist had said and I suggested that they could try cutting out uncultured cow's milk products, continuing with baby yoghurt (the culturing uses up the lactose) - being very careful to replace each item with a substitute eg milk with soy milk, cheese with soy cheese etc. I didn't expect any immediate changes and didn't want to cause any unnecessary problems with dietary changes.

I received a phone call from a delighted friend the very next day. She had removed cows milk products from his diet the previous day. She reported that he'd had a good day and then he sleep quietly through the entire night. The first time in eighteen months! You can imagine how happy she was!

How simple was that!

Consider the possibility of an allergy if you are unwell and the doctor can't find anything wrong.

After all no one knows what you eat and how it makes you feel better than you do!

Causes Of Sudden Hearing Loss

Causes Of Sudden Hearing Loss

Sudden hearing loss can simply be described as an immediate drop or change in your hearing pattern for a period of time though not exceeding three days. This situation is easy to detect in that you can be able to notice it when you ask your ear to hear or when making a call and may be accompanied by a popping sound. Sudden hearing loss is an emergency case and you should contact your doctor with immediate effect.

Though the main cause of hearing loss is yet to be established, doctors say 85 percent of this case is idiopathic. This means that the cause is unknown. In most cases, this problem affects one ear alone and 70% of reported cases have stabilized to normal on their own. Studies however argue that you can be able to contract this ailment by infection. People suffering from meningitis have been known to experience hearing loss which can turn into deafness unless proper treatment is administered. Another common infection of this problem is mumps and measles.

In the event of suffering head injuries especially a fractured skull, you may be subjected to permanent hearing loss unless quick and proper medication is prescribed. Many a times we are subjected to noisy environment, this can be at home, at work or any other place and we feel good or do nothing about it, this indeed can cause hearing loss. When at an explosion scene, you may suffer from this disease due to loud noise. Immediate surgery on the ear can also cause sudden hearing loss after the operation or years later. Another cause of this disease is barotrauma. This occurs especially when the ear is exposed to changes such as pressure. This can be when diving or flying which affects the middle ear.

This medical condition can be treated using several ways depending on the magnitude. The most common used methods are the use of steroids and vasodilation which entails treatment to ensure that the blood vessels are relaxed. Low salts, diuretics and antiviral treatment can also be used depending on the cause of the ailment.

However, there are other methods in which you can use to reduce or prevent this impairment. This can be by the use of hearing aids. With authority from a doctor, you can use ear muffs or ear plugs to aid in hearing though the main preventive measure is to be aware of the noise level around you. It is said that noise above 80 decibels is loud and should be turned down or regulated. If you use iPods and other media, turn down the voice for the sake of your ear. It is also good to visit audiologist annually to check the condition of your ears. You should also avoid putting anything in your ear such as liquids or cotton swabs. This can only be done under the recommendation of a doctor.

Common Causes Of Tinnitus And Hearing Loss

Common Causes Of Tinnitus And Hearing Loss

Tinnitus is a condition that most of us experience at some point of our lives. Usually the symptoms are so mild that they don't affect for our everyday life. However, sometimes the ringing in the ears can be so intense that it significantly impairs the quality of the sufferer's life.

Tinnitus is not a disease. It is only a symptom of some other disorder in a human system. It is rather common that tinnitus comes along with hearing loss.

So, what exactly is tinnitus? Tinnitus symptoms have been described as a ringing, hissing, buzzing, or even roaring sound heard emanating from the ear drum. Over 20 million Americans suffer from tinnitus each year in one or both ears.

Tinnitus can be described as a physical disruption in one of the many tissues related to the handling of incoming sounds. These tissues include all of the areas of the actual ear, such as the ear drum, cochlea, and inner ear, all the way to the brain itself. Any disruption in these tissues can lead to tinnitus.

There are some diseases that have been associated with tinnitus. Some of the most typical ones include ear infections, circulatory disorders, and changes in hormone levels.

Tinnitus has been associated with hearing loss in several instances. However, hearing loss and tinnitus are not always related. Also, among elderly people tinnitus has often been seen to be the first sign of age-induced hearing loss. That is why a hearing test might be wise when an individual at higher age is affected by tinnitus.

The most common cause of tinnitus is an exposure to loud noises. People who are working in noisy areas or constantly expose themselves to loud noises, such as musicians and factory workers, are at higher risk of having tinnitus.

Still other forms of hearing related tinnitus occur when the brain is damaged due to powerful explosions or changes in air pressure. This is, unfortunately, a common concern for war veterans and is happening more and more now that soldiers are being exposed to considerable explosive devices in the form of IEDs.

Considering all the multiple ways tinnitus can occur in a person, it is even more shocking and perplexing that tinnitus can also occur for no reason in a person with otherwise healthy hearing. This ailment often shows no physical cause, but can still tremendously disrupt the life of one suffering with it.

Fatigue, anxiety, and issues with memory are common in these types of tinnitus sufferers, as it is extremely difficult to rest or concentrate when a constant ringing is being heard in the ears. Understanding that tinnitus can have no cause does, unfortunately, little to answer the question of whether your tinnitus is related to your hearing.

Options For Correcting Hearing Loss

Options For Correcting Hearing Loss

Eyeglasses were once considered very unhip, and every bully on the playground couldn't wait to be the first to call someone names for needing to wear them. Today, however, glasses and contacts are very much a social norm. In fact, many who don't even require vision correction will order frames with clear glass or colored contact without a prescription just to wear them as an accessory.

Unfortunately, this is still not the case with hearing aids. Less than fifty percent of people that need hearing correction will seek out a solution, because the idea of wearing a hearing aid is just too hard for them to swallow. Instead, they will choose to turn up the volume, which will only succeed in making the hearing loss more pronounced over time.

Hearing loss is usually a gradual development, and people are often not even aware of the deficit until a friend or family member calls attention to it. Once a person has been made aware of the problem, however, there is no excuse for not taking steps to correct it. Consulting an audiologist, or a hearing doctor, is the first step. The family physician will be glad to supply a referral if you do not already know an audiologist.

If a hearing aid is prescribed, there is no reason to fret. There are several types of devices and all have a different fit and function. The full shell and behind the ear models are prescribed to those that suffer severe hearing loss. Chances are, you'd have been aware of your hearing loss long ago if your situation requires that you wear one of these models.

There is actually a very small hearing aid that fits directly into the canal of your ear. These are molded especially for each individual wearer, and when used correctly are virtually invisible. The contact lens of hearing aids! Keep in mind that its tiny size can make the controls hard to use, though.

The next size up fits almost entirely into your ear canal, with just a bit of the hearing aid visible in the shell of the ear. These are especially good for patients with mild to moderate hearing loss, and the size makes them somewhat easier to operate. Also, there is a half-shell hearing aid that is more visible, but it is much easier to operate because of its larger size.

Once you have been fitted for a hearing device, you should allow yourself plenty of time to become accustomed to the new feel of it, as well as the sounds that you will hear. These aids are not meant to return your hearing to normal, but they will amplify the sounds that you want to hear, and cancel out the background noises that make following conversation difficult. Be sure that any device you choose provides ample trial time.

Studies show that these hearing correction devices can greatly increase your quality of life. Your new hearing ability can even make it possible for you to earn more money in the workplace. Don't let social norms keep you from seeking help.

Low Frequency Hearing Loss - What is it and What Causes It?

Low Frequency Hearing Loss - What is it and What Causes It?

Most loss of hearing follows a standard pattern. As the person gets older, they lose the ability to hear the higher frequencies. By the time most people reach their mid-twenties, they can't hear the highest pitched sounds that teenagers can hear anymore. Women and children become harder to understand than men. This is high frequency hearing loss -- the most common loss of hearing and the form most hearing aids are designed for.

But what about the people whose loss is the exact opposite of this? The people that can hear women better than men and can't hear the roar of machinery that bothers most sufferers? These people have low frequency hearing loss.

You can probably already tell that it's uncommon. There are only a few things that bring about this condition.

The first and most common cause is Meniere's Disease. It's a rare condition caused by a weakening of the membrane in the ear, and in addition to low frequency hearing loss, it causes episodes of vertigo, uncontrollable falling down, nausea, ringing in the ears, and feeling that the ears are blocked up. Sufferers of this disease usually feel exhausted after these episodes. The low frequency hearing loss is one of the milder symptoms of this disease.

The second is genetic factors. Low frequency loss of hearing often runs in families, and many people with it can trace it several generations back. People with the genetic form usually start losing their ability to hearing lower frequencies in childhood. In many ways children with this form of hearing loss are more fortunate than those with others, since all the sounds needed for normal speech are audible, and they can learn to talk normally without the need for speech therapy.

The third possible cause is childhood illness. In some instances, diseases such as Measles and the Chicken Pox can lead to low frequency hearing loss, though this is very, very rare. The advent of vaccines for such diseases is making it even rarer.

People unable to hear low frequencies have different sounds causing them problems than the average high frequency sufferer. As said earlier, men will be more difficult to understand than women. In addition, consonant sounds are slightly higher-pitched than vowel sounds, and so they're easier to hear. Thunder, car engines, appliances, and other machinery are often difficult to hear or inaudible. Traffic noises are also hard, which is one of the dangers of this form of hearing loss.

Hearing Loss In The Elderly

Hearing Loss In The Elderly

Last Sunday my mother was visiting. We were playing cards
when I began to realize how long we have accommodated her
hearing loss.

My mother lost the hearing in her right ear as a teenager.
As children we learned to always talk to her left ear,
have the radio off when she was driving, wait for
the TV commercial and lower the volume before speaking.

We had many a laugh when after calling my mother she would
walk to another room or the other end of the house
thinking the voice came from that direction. Mom laughed
with us MOST of the time.

When my nursing career led me to the field of
Geriatrics I automatically knew how to communicate
with people with hearing loss.

Twenty eight million people suffer from hearing loss.

Ages 65-74-- 23% have hearing loss.

Ages 75 84-- -33% have hearing loss.

ages 85+ ---- 48% have hearing loss.

Most older people with hearing loss never see an audiologist
nor do they get fitted for hearing aids. It amazes me that so few
are willing to get help.
Hearing loss has a very gradual onset, frequently not noticed by
the person himself. Usually it is the spouse that raises the
possibility of hearing loss.

Most doctors do not test for hearing loss as part of a
routine physical and for some unknown reason, most older
people will not complain of their hearing loss.
Denial is very strong when the topic is hearing loss.

As people age the hearing sense does decline in many folks.

This presents many problems:

Unable to hear emergency sirens, fire alarms, honking horns

Often develop depression over time due to an inability to
hear conversations.

Often withdraw from social gatherings and isolate themselves.

Often develop paranoia, thinking people are talking
about them since they are only able to pick up occasional words.

Often become irritable as they isolate.

These symptoms are very common among the frail elderly, especially
when in group activities such as sitting at a table playing cards, or eating.

Communicating With Elders with Hearing Loss

Face the person- within three feet.

Sit at eye level.

Get eye contact.

Be sure you have their attention.

Turn off any background noises-TV, Radio.

Announce the topic of the conversation.

Enunciate clearly.

Do not eat or chew when communicating.

If not understood, rephrase your statement using different words.

Use hand gestures as needed.

Talk to the good ear if appropriate.

Make sure your elder sees a doctor for hearing
difficulty. Ask for a referral to an audiologist.

Compound Grief and Hearing Loss

Compound Grief and Hearing Loss

The five stages of grief are often cited as the path that people take in overcoming or managing the emotional trauma of hearing loss. But typically the five stages (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance) are only discussed as they relate to the individual with hearing loss. There is no denying that in a family system, the emotional effects of hearing loss are most profound for the actual person with the loss. However, all family members are affected by hearing loss.

Unlike most other physical conditions, hearing loss has a unique and direct impact on interpersonal communication. Interpersonal psychology pioneer Harry Stack Sullivan claimed that one's personality could be thought of as the sum total of his or her social interactions with others. Taking a cue from Sullivan, it would not be a stretch to say hearing loss, which has obvious effects on communication, affects one's personality. The implication is that the grief of someone with hearing loss does not occur in a vacuum. However standard grief models are typically applied to individual situations, not couples or families. The fact is, when one family member has hearing loss, all are affected; each member. The stages of grief apply not only to the person with hearing loss, but also to each of his or her family members. What makes matters even more complex is that it is unlikely that all family members ever experience the same stage of grief at any one time.

Imagine a husband with hearing loss in the depression stage of grief who feels that life is not worth living and so is reluctant to consider using hearing aids or ALDs let alone seek emotional help. Now consider that man's partner who may be in an earlier stage of anger. On the surface she may seem angry that her partner won't help himself by going to an audiologist, but in reality is probably angry that she has lost her hearing spouse who once was much more supportive; emotionally and perhaps otherwise. Finally, imagine that the couple has a teenaged child who is in the even earlier stage of denial. The teenager seeks to protect herself by denying that the problem exists. This however, is not the end of the dilemma. Real healing cannot take place until the family comes to realize that each person's stage is likely impacting the other persons'. Many families attempt to maneuver through their staggered grief responses over a period of years and even decades; sometimes without resolution. Imagine a single family automobile where each family member has his or her own steering wheel, accelerator and brake as the family attempts to drive down life's highway and you get a picture of confusion, chaos and lack of direction.
There is however, good news about this family or compound grief. In fact, the good news is the same as the bad news: Each person has an impact on the other person's ability to manage their individual stage of grief. Things tend to go wrong when each family member attempts to manage each stage on his or her own. On the other hand, with the appropriate outside intervention, the family could learn to manage the familygrief by considering each other member's specific stage and understanding how each person impacts every other person in the family.

The secret to managing family grief is to develop an overt language of expressing thoughts and emotions to one another; to learn to 'talk about talking'. Each family member likely experiences the impact of hearing loss in different ways. For this reason, it is important to encourage each family member to explore and share how the grief of hearing loss has affected them. Though each might feel alone in the family or relationship, it's important to recognize that there IS common ground; even if it is the common ground of feeling jolted out of their pre-hearing loss family roles. Talking about grief responses is even more important in the case of hearing loss because as stated earlier, hearing loss directly impacts communication in ways that are unlike other kinds of loss or emotional trauma. While some families naturally learn to discuss and resolve their compound grief, many do not. In such cases a family therapist can help people with hearing loss and those living with someone with hearing loss, navigate the waters of hearing loss-related, compound grief.

What is an Implantable Hearing Aid and When Would You Get One?

What is an Implantable Hearing Aid and When Would You Get One?

Implanted hearing aids amplify sound and transmit the vibrations through the ear. They are a good option for people who are hard of hearing (who do not have a profound hearing loss) and cannot use hearing aids. They are also useful for people who prefer not to have a visible hearing device outside their ear.

The two types of implantable hearing aids are either surgically implanted or non-surgically implanted. The surgically implanted hearing aid is a device which is implanted either in the bone or in the middle ear. Most implantable middle-ear devices almost completely eliminate feedback, one of the most annoying problems with conventional hearing devices. Some devices may allow the patient to continue "hearing" while swimming or bathing.

Cochlear implants provide sound perception by using an electrode which is surgically implanted into the cochlea (the spiral cavity of the inner ear). Patients must meet strict criteria in order to qualify for a cochlear implant.

Auditory brainstem implants are designed for patients who have hearing loss because of tumors. Often the tumor is removed in the same procedure where the ABIs (auditory brainstem implants) are implanted. These implants can be used on patients 12 years of age or older, and no hearing criteria is required. A study of 61 patients receiving the ABI showed that the device is effective and safe in most patients. It helped to improve the lip-reading abilities in most patients and a few were able to understand speech.

Bone-anchored hearing devices have been used in Europe since 1977, and more recently here in the United States. A microphone in the processor vibrates the bone in the skull and the sound is transmitted to the inner ear. The FDA has approved this device for children 5 years of age or older; but in Europe, younger children have used it successfully.

Some non-surgically implanted aids are implanted under the skin and others are inserted into the ear canal. When inserted into the canal, they can be worn for months and then removed or replaced when the batteries wear out. Some people find these to be uncomfortable simply because they do not like having an object in their ear canals.

Implantable hearing aids provide sound which is more natural and clearer than traditional hearing devices. Speech is more easily recognized, and a remote control makes the device convenient to use. Implanted hearing aids give patients the freedom to swim, shower, and live a more active lifestyle.

Cure For Tinnitus - Can Ear Wax Cause Tinnitus Hearing Loss?

Ear wax is a likely possible cause of tinnitus hearing loss if the condition is deemed severe. While more than half of the cases are mild and can be easily treated, there are also cases that ear wax have caused permanent damage to the cochlea, giving rise to ringing in the ears. The temporary cause is not difficult to treat as cure for tinnitus and you will soon enjoy the blissful sounds and noise around you again. The permanent damage may be more difficult to manage.

This is a condition where you hear sounds in the ear without the presence of any actual external sounds, which could include buzzing, roaring, whistling or ringing in the ears. Ear wax accumulation is the most common cause of the buzzing yet most easily neglected aspect of personal hygiene. If you should find this symptom happening to you, you should seek the advice of a professional physician instead of scraping your ears with swaps, hairpins, or any hard objects.

While ear wax is common as cause of tinnitus hearing loss, it is often not permanent.

Excess ear wax becomes a cause of the disorder when it partially blocks out external sounds, thereby amplifying subtle noises within the ear canal. This gives you sensation of the buzzing or ringing in the ears. If ignored, it can subconsciously become serious anxiety and stress issues subsequently and even give rise to sleepless nights.

Another cause is wear wax cleaning itself. we often practise ear cleaning, which is good personal hygiene if done on a regular daily basis. But if you wait till the disorder arises to start cleaning your ears you have waited too long as self cleaning of ear wax can give rise to complications due to hard scraping, hurting the inner ear and the cochlea which can be permanent damage at times.

Hence, ear wax might seem a small issue to you as a personal hygiene to upkeep, extreme care must be taken to find the cause of tinnitus hearing loss, so that the correction treatment can be effected. Your first step should be the Ear Nose Throat specialist who will give you a proper diagnosis and possibly a good ear cleanup. Thereafter you will need to follow a holistic cure for tinnitus treatment encompassing a healthy lifestyle, enhanced diet and vitamin regime, regular exercises and stress management. This should ensure that ear wax induced tinnitus hearing loss does not recur again.
