Acoustic Neuroma Hearing Loss - Strategies For Coping With One Sided Deafness

Acoustic Neuroma Hearing Loss - Strategies For Coping With One Sided Deafness

Often one of the symptoms of acoustic neuroma is single sided hearing loss. Depending on the tumor size, type of treatment and other factors, single sided deafness or near deafness can be one of the outcomes of treatment.

If you are living with one sided hearing loss or deafness, you may be familiar with some of the following scenarios.

You are walking down the street, or across campus, or through a parking lot. A friendly voice is calling your name. Your look around but can't see who it is. They continue to cheerfully call out, "Over here!" Each time you ask where, they again call out, "Over here!"

You are in a noisy restaurant at a work related meeting. You can't hear the person beside you on the side of your deaf ear. You can hear some of what the person on your other side is saying. You can hear some of what the person across from you is saying. You can't hear your boss, who called the meeting. You hope you aren't missing any important information

You are at a social get together. Not everyone there knows you well or knows about your single sided deafness. You are doing your best to participate and to fit in. You are picking up the gist of the conversation with those right across from you or right next to your hearing ear. In fact, you are doing a bit of grinning and nodding, and making a few comments here and there, which you hope are relevant.  You happen to look to the side of your deaf ear, and see that the person sitting beside you is moving their lips. They seem to be talking to you. You have no idea how long they have been speaking. They do not seem to notice that you have not heard a single word.

The following tips are being offered to help you cope:

*Use visual cues and knowledge of your environment to figure out where a voice is coming from.

*Use seating arrangements to your advantage. With experimenting, you will eventually figure out the best places to sit in a group setting.

*Turn to face a person sitting on your deaf side, even though it feels awkward at first.

*Communicate your needs to others. Be easy on them if they forget. Just tell them again.

*Be easy on yourself. It is not your fault this happened. You owe it to yourself to speak up so others can help to include you.

*Have a sense of humor. The best laid plans are bound to go wrong, and it would behoove you to learn to laugh about it.

*Relax! In most social settings, most people won't hear most of what is said. You can always catch up with people one on one, later.

*Have a daily relaxation routine, such as breathing exercises, yoga, or walking. It will go a long way toward helping you cope and put things in perspective.

I hope these tips have been helpful to you. I wish you the best on your acoustic neuroma journey.

Diseases That Can Cause Hearing Loss

Diseases That Can Cause Hearing Loss

There are many different types of diseases that can cause hearing loss. The diseases are usually during the childhood years, but teens and adults can get them if proper vaccination as a child is not given. The hearing loss may be immediate or delayed, depending on the disease and the severity of the case.

The first disease that can cause hearing loss is rubella. Rubella is also called the German measles. The measles are usually a mild disease and pass with no complications other than annoyance to the affected person. However, without a vaccine, a child or even a pregnant mother can have a serious case of the illness which damages the developing audio system. Normally, the rubella that causes problems is a congenital form, which causes auditory defects of the ears and usually deafness occurs.

The next disease that can cause hearing loss is meningitis. Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes. There are different types of meningitis, such as viral or bacterial, and some are severe while others aren't so dangerous. In severe cases, the membranes surrounding the brain stem swell and cause abnormal pressure, resulting in hearing loss which may be temporary or permanent, depending on how long the membranes are swollen and if any damage is done to the nerves. If damage is done to the nerves, then it can never be repaired. If swelling goes down quickly, then damage may be restored.

A third type of disease that can cause hearing loss is CMV, or cytomegalovirus. CMV is a virus that belongs to the herpes family and affects the salivary glands. In severe cases, especially those that aren't treated, varying degrees of loss to the hearing occurs. Most often hearing loss develops when the pregnant mother has the disease and passes it to the fetus, who is not protected.

Another disease causing hearing loss is called glue ear. Glue ear is when the middle ear is infected and inflamed. When the inflammation and infection are not treated, it can cause a buildup of pus and when it ruptures, the pus will ooze out of the ear. Untreated, the infection causes damage to the inner ear and the ear drum. Glue ear most commonly affects those under seven years of age, but occasionally adults can have it too.

There is no way to reverse hearing loss from a disease. Prevention is the best way to stave off any type of hearing loss. Prevention means not only getting your infants and children vaccinated, but having the female receive the vaccinations before becoming pregnant. A pregnant mother is vulnerable to diseases, and the fetus she carries is even more so, because they haven't had a chance to build any immunity or get vaccines. Most of these diseases are preventable with a simple shot, received as an infant in one or two visits. If you don't get the shots when they are scheduled, your doctor can get you caught up very easily in one or two visits.

The Sinusitis Hearing Connection

The Sinusitis Hearing Connection

Do you suffer from hearing loss or ear pains when your sinuses flare-up? It's not your imagination. There is a connection between your sinuses and ears. If you suffer from sinusitis hearing problems, here's the information that should help you out.

The Eustachian Tube

The ears and the throat are connected through the Eustachian tube. The nose and the sinuses are also connected to the throat. If infections from the sinuses travel through the nose and throat, it can reach the Eustachian tube and start to affect your ears.

This isn't as uncommon as you think. If you suffer from flare-ups, you would've noticed the ease with which the infection can spread to your nose and throat. In fact, having a runny nose and a sore throat are two of the most common symptoms related to a flare-up.

Infection of the Eustachian Tube

The Eustachian tube is used by the body to equalize the pressure inside and outside the ear. This is very important for the inner ear to do its job of processing sound, which are vibrations in the air. If an infection reaches this tube, it can swell shut or get blocked by mucus. This can lead to further problems because the mucus, the fluid, and even the air inside the ears are trapped.

Middle Ear Infections

With the mucus and the fluids trapped in the middle or inner ear, the area becomes very favorable for bacterial growth. This can lead to middle ear infections that can sometimes cause hearing loss. Some people actually go through complete hearing loss in at least one ear. This is temporary most of the time. However, the buildup of fluids and air pressure inside the middle ear can cause permanent damage. Due to the high pressures, your ear drums can actually rupture.

Solutions

Should you suffer from sinusitis hearing problems, you'd want to get to the sinusitis first. Usually the problem can go away without medical treatment but if you don't treat the flare up that led to the ear infections, you can suffer from repeated bouts of hearing problems.

In getting to your sinus problem, you should consult your doctor to get a proper diagnosis on what you actually have. If you can get to the cause, the treatment should be much easier. Also, you can conduct some self-care techniques like drinking plenty of fluids and resting to help your body repair itself and clear up the excess mucus that could cause the blockages in the nose and throat.

If your ears start to hurt and you fear that you may be suffering from an ear infection, it is again best to consult your doctor. Again, most of the time the problem will go away on its own especially if you've treated the flare-ups, but it is always a good idea to be sure. Some middle ear infections require antibiotics and other meds because the area inside the middle ear has become very favorable to bacteria and bacterial growths are rampaging inside.

It is very important that you consult your doctor before attempting remedies to this kind of ear problem. Also, do not self medicate if you don't know the cause of the problem. Misuse of drugs can lead to further problems.

Allergies and Hearing

Allergies and Hearing

When you think about health and nutrition, it's important to be aware of how various foodstuffs affect your wellbeing.

It's quite amazing just how many allergens there are in a well balanced diet. Things like gluten in wheat breads and cereals, lactose in uncultured dairy products, mono sodium glutamate in tomatoes, - I'm sure you can think of dozens - that can turn your life upside down.

Allergy has been called the great masquerader because it can contribute to and mimic many illnesses that we do not typically associated with allergy.

I have a particular interest in issues surrounding hearing, and in the fact that there may be allergies involved with some conductive hearing losses.

Conductive Hearing Loss results from problems in the middle ear, known as Otitis Media.

Middle ear infection is extremely common and very few children never experience it. Otitis Media can be painful, but is usually short term & the Conductive Hearing Loss is temporary.

Otisis Media begins with an ear ache, swelling of the membrane in the eustachian tube (resulting in blockage of the tube that normally aerates the middle ear) and results in a build up of fluid behind the ear drum. It is the pressure of the fluid that causes the pain and it is the fluid that decreases the amount of sound being conducted through the middle ear that causes the hearing loss.

As I said before Otitis Media is extremely common and most children will experience it once or twice in their lives.

When Otitis Media becomes recurrent, there is enormous cause for concern. Not only because the child is miserable and maybe in considerable pain but because the child's normal hearing becomes distorted.

Young children are not fluent language speakers although they are learning at a phenomenal rate. The experience of having a fluctuating hearing level as a result of Otitis Media in childhood can result in a life time of difficulties. There is research to suggest that the language pathways in the brain form differently. Some children who have suffered from recurrent Otitis Media have serious problems with understanding what is going on around them, that causes major social and academic problems at school.

Sadly the repercussions of Otitis Media and Fluctuating Conductive Hearing Loss in childhood is generally underestimated. After all it only last a short while, the hearing loss is only slight or moderate, it's all temporary - Right?

Wrong!

For many children life goes on wonderfully, BUT for some, early Otitis Media leaves them with lifelong difficulties and even an unrecognized permanent disability that they carry with them. And they may fail at school, and socially and get into trouble. A small hearing loss but a major loss in Quality of Life.

Some years ago I read of the work being done by Dr Michael A Schmidt on ear infections in children. He pointed out that in one study that allergic children had double the chance of suffering from Otitis Media as non allergic children.

The main allergens from his findings were food (with dairy products at the top of the list) and airborne irritants (with cigarette smoke topping the list).

It was with this in mind that I met up with some friends I had not seen for some time. Sadly their new son had recurrent Otitis Media. They were aware of my concerns about language development and had been conscientiously taking their son to doctors and specialists who were giving him vast quantities of antibiotics. (we'll save antibiotics for another time!)

He was eighteen months old and had never slept through the night and had often been very miserable. They were quite distraught. I suggested they talk to the Otorhinolaryngologist (Ear Nose & Throat Specialist) about the possibility of a food allergy. The specialist simply dismissed the idea as nonsense.

Later my friends and I talked about what the specialist had said and I suggested that they could try cutting out uncultured cow's milk products, continuing with baby yoghurt (the culturing uses up the lactose) - being very careful to replace each item with a substitute eg milk with soy milk, cheese with soy cheese etc. I didn't expect any immediate changes and didn't want to cause any unnecessary problems with dietary changes.

I received a phone call from a delighted friend the very next day. She had removed cows milk products from his diet the previous day. She reported that he'd had a good day and then he sleep quietly through the entire night. The first time in eighteen months! You can imagine how happy she was!

How simple was that!

Consider the possibility of an allergy if you are unwell and the doctor can't find anything wrong.

After all no one knows what you eat and how it makes you feel better than you do!

Causes Of Sudden Hearing Loss

Causes Of Sudden Hearing Loss

Sudden hearing loss can simply be described as an immediate drop or change in your hearing pattern for a period of time though not exceeding three days. This situation is easy to detect in that you can be able to notice it when you ask your ear to hear or when making a call and may be accompanied by a popping sound. Sudden hearing loss is an emergency case and you should contact your doctor with immediate effect.

Though the main cause of hearing loss is yet to be established, doctors say 85 percent of this case is idiopathic. This means that the cause is unknown. In most cases, this problem affects one ear alone and 70% of reported cases have stabilized to normal on their own. Studies however argue that you can be able to contract this ailment by infection. People suffering from meningitis have been known to experience hearing loss which can turn into deafness unless proper treatment is administered. Another common infection of this problem is mumps and measles.

In the event of suffering head injuries especially a fractured skull, you may be subjected to permanent hearing loss unless quick and proper medication is prescribed. Many a times we are subjected to noisy environment, this can be at home, at work or any other place and we feel good or do nothing about it, this indeed can cause hearing loss. When at an explosion scene, you may suffer from this disease due to loud noise. Immediate surgery on the ear can also cause sudden hearing loss after the operation or years later. Another cause of this disease is barotrauma. This occurs especially when the ear is exposed to changes such as pressure. This can be when diving or flying which affects the middle ear.

This medical condition can be treated using several ways depending on the magnitude. The most common used methods are the use of steroids and vasodilation which entails treatment to ensure that the blood vessels are relaxed. Low salts, diuretics and antiviral treatment can also be used depending on the cause of the ailment.

However, there are other methods in which you can use to reduce or prevent this impairment. This can be by the use of hearing aids. With authority from a doctor, you can use ear muffs or ear plugs to aid in hearing though the main preventive measure is to be aware of the noise level around you. It is said that noise above 80 decibels is loud and should be turned down or regulated. If you use iPods and other media, turn down the voice for the sake of your ear. It is also good to visit audiologist annually to check the condition of your ears. You should also avoid putting anything in your ear such as liquids or cotton swabs. This can only be done under the recommendation of a doctor.

Common Causes Of Tinnitus And Hearing Loss

Common Causes Of Tinnitus And Hearing Loss

Tinnitus is a condition that most of us experience at some point of our lives. Usually the symptoms are so mild that they don't affect for our everyday life. However, sometimes the ringing in the ears can be so intense that it significantly impairs the quality of the sufferer's life.

Tinnitus is not a disease. It is only a symptom of some other disorder in a human system. It is rather common that tinnitus comes along with hearing loss.

So, what exactly is tinnitus? Tinnitus symptoms have been described as a ringing, hissing, buzzing, or even roaring sound heard emanating from the ear drum. Over 20 million Americans suffer from tinnitus each year in one or both ears.

Tinnitus can be described as a physical disruption in one of the many tissues related to the handling of incoming sounds. These tissues include all of the areas of the actual ear, such as the ear drum, cochlea, and inner ear, all the way to the brain itself. Any disruption in these tissues can lead to tinnitus.

There are some diseases that have been associated with tinnitus. Some of the most typical ones include ear infections, circulatory disorders, and changes in hormone levels.

Tinnitus has been associated with hearing loss in several instances. However, hearing loss and tinnitus are not always related. Also, among elderly people tinnitus has often been seen to be the first sign of age-induced hearing loss. That is why a hearing test might be wise when an individual at higher age is affected by tinnitus.

The most common cause of tinnitus is an exposure to loud noises. People who are working in noisy areas or constantly expose themselves to loud noises, such as musicians and factory workers, are at higher risk of having tinnitus.

Still other forms of hearing related tinnitus occur when the brain is damaged due to powerful explosions or changes in air pressure. This is, unfortunately, a common concern for war veterans and is happening more and more now that soldiers are being exposed to considerable explosive devices in the form of IEDs.

Considering all the multiple ways tinnitus can occur in a person, it is even more shocking and perplexing that tinnitus can also occur for no reason in a person with otherwise healthy hearing. This ailment often shows no physical cause, but can still tremendously disrupt the life of one suffering with it.

Fatigue, anxiety, and issues with memory are common in these types of tinnitus sufferers, as it is extremely difficult to rest or concentrate when a constant ringing is being heard in the ears. Understanding that tinnitus can have no cause does, unfortunately, little to answer the question of whether your tinnitus is related to your hearing.

Options For Correcting Hearing Loss

Options For Correcting Hearing Loss

Eyeglasses were once considered very unhip, and every bully on the playground couldn't wait to be the first to call someone names for needing to wear them. Today, however, glasses and contacts are very much a social norm. In fact, many who don't even require vision correction will order frames with clear glass or colored contact without a prescription just to wear them as an accessory.

Unfortunately, this is still not the case with hearing aids. Less than fifty percent of people that need hearing correction will seek out a solution, because the idea of wearing a hearing aid is just too hard for them to swallow. Instead, they will choose to turn up the volume, which will only succeed in making the hearing loss more pronounced over time.

Hearing loss is usually a gradual development, and people are often not even aware of the deficit until a friend or family member calls attention to it. Once a person has been made aware of the problem, however, there is no excuse for not taking steps to correct it. Consulting an audiologist, or a hearing doctor, is the first step. The family physician will be glad to supply a referral if you do not already know an audiologist.

If a hearing aid is prescribed, there is no reason to fret. There are several types of devices and all have a different fit and function. The full shell and behind the ear models are prescribed to those that suffer severe hearing loss. Chances are, you'd have been aware of your hearing loss long ago if your situation requires that you wear one of these models.

There is actually a very small hearing aid that fits directly into the canal of your ear. These are molded especially for each individual wearer, and when used correctly are virtually invisible. The contact lens of hearing aids! Keep in mind that its tiny size can make the controls hard to use, though.

The next size up fits almost entirely into your ear canal, with just a bit of the hearing aid visible in the shell of the ear. These are especially good for patients with mild to moderate hearing loss, and the size makes them somewhat easier to operate. Also, there is a half-shell hearing aid that is more visible, but it is much easier to operate because of its larger size.

Once you have been fitted for a hearing device, you should allow yourself plenty of time to become accustomed to the new feel of it, as well as the sounds that you will hear. These aids are not meant to return your hearing to normal, but they will amplify the sounds that you want to hear, and cancel out the background noises that make following conversation difficult. Be sure that any device you choose provides ample trial time.

Studies show that these hearing correction devices can greatly increase your quality of life. Your new hearing ability can even make it possible for you to earn more money in the workplace. Don't let social norms keep you from seeking help.

Low Frequency Hearing Loss - What is it and What Causes It?

Low Frequency Hearing Loss - What is it and What Causes It?

Most loss of hearing follows a standard pattern. As the person gets older, they lose the ability to hear the higher frequencies. By the time most people reach their mid-twenties, they can't hear the highest pitched sounds that teenagers can hear anymore. Women and children become harder to understand than men. This is high frequency hearing loss -- the most common loss of hearing and the form most hearing aids are designed for.

But what about the people whose loss is the exact opposite of this? The people that can hear women better than men and can't hear the roar of machinery that bothers most sufferers? These people have low frequency hearing loss.

You can probably already tell that it's uncommon. There are only a few things that bring about this condition.

The first and most common cause is Meniere's Disease. It's a rare condition caused by a weakening of the membrane in the ear, and in addition to low frequency hearing loss, it causes episodes of vertigo, uncontrollable falling down, nausea, ringing in the ears, and feeling that the ears are blocked up. Sufferers of this disease usually feel exhausted after these episodes. The low frequency hearing loss is one of the milder symptoms of this disease.

The second is genetic factors. Low frequency loss of hearing often runs in families, and many people with it can trace it several generations back. People with the genetic form usually start losing their ability to hearing lower frequencies in childhood. In many ways children with this form of hearing loss are more fortunate than those with others, since all the sounds needed for normal speech are audible, and they can learn to talk normally without the need for speech therapy.

The third possible cause is childhood illness. In some instances, diseases such as Measles and the Chicken Pox can lead to low frequency hearing loss, though this is very, very rare. The advent of vaccines for such diseases is making it even rarer.

People unable to hear low frequencies have different sounds causing them problems than the average high frequency sufferer. As said earlier, men will be more difficult to understand than women. In addition, consonant sounds are slightly higher-pitched than vowel sounds, and so they're easier to hear. Thunder, car engines, appliances, and other machinery are often difficult to hear or inaudible. Traffic noises are also hard, which is one of the dangers of this form of hearing loss.

Hearing Loss In The Elderly

Hearing Loss In The Elderly

Last Sunday my mother was visiting. We were playing cards
when I began to realize how long we have accommodated her
hearing loss.

My mother lost the hearing in her right ear as a teenager.
As children we learned to always talk to her left ear,
have the radio off when she was driving, wait for
the TV commercial and lower the volume before speaking.

We had many a laugh when after calling my mother she would
walk to another room or the other end of the house
thinking the voice came from that direction. Mom laughed
with us MOST of the time.

When my nursing career led me to the field of
Geriatrics I automatically knew how to communicate
with people with hearing loss.

Twenty eight million people suffer from hearing loss.

Ages 65-74-- 23% have hearing loss.

Ages 75 84-- -33% have hearing loss.

ages 85+ ---- 48% have hearing loss.

Most older people with hearing loss never see an audiologist
nor do they get fitted for hearing aids. It amazes me that so few
are willing to get help.
Hearing loss has a very gradual onset, frequently not noticed by
the person himself. Usually it is the spouse that raises the
possibility of hearing loss.

Most doctors do not test for hearing loss as part of a
routine physical and for some unknown reason, most older
people will not complain of their hearing loss.
Denial is very strong when the topic is hearing loss.

As people age the hearing sense does decline in many folks.

This presents many problems:

Unable to hear emergency sirens, fire alarms, honking horns

Often develop depression over time due to an inability to
hear conversations.

Often withdraw from social gatherings and isolate themselves.

Often develop paranoia, thinking people are talking
about them since they are only able to pick up occasional words.

Often become irritable as they isolate.

These symptoms are very common among the frail elderly, especially
when in group activities such as sitting at a table playing cards, or eating.

Communicating With Elders with Hearing Loss

Face the person- within three feet.

Sit at eye level.

Get eye contact.

Be sure you have their attention.

Turn off any background noises-TV, Radio.

Announce the topic of the conversation.

Enunciate clearly.

Do not eat or chew when communicating.

If not understood, rephrase your statement using different words.

Use hand gestures as needed.

Talk to the good ear if appropriate.

Make sure your elder sees a doctor for hearing
difficulty. Ask for a referral to an audiologist.

But typically the five stages (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance) are only discussed as they relate to the individual with hearing loss. There is no denying that in a family system, the emotional effects of hearing loss are most profound for the actual person with the loss. However, all family members are affected by hearing loss.

Unlike most other physical conditions, hearing loss has a unique and direct impact on interpersonal communication. Interpersonal psychology pioneer Harry Stack Sullivan claimed that one's personality could be thought of as the sum total of his or her social interactions with others. Taking a cue from Sullivan, it would not be a stretch to say hearing loss, which has obvious effects on communication, affects one's personality. The implication is that the grief of someone with hearing loss does not occur in a vacuum. However standard grief models are typically applied to individual situations, not couples or families. The fact is, when one family member has hearing loss, all are affected; each member. The stages of grief apply not only to the person with hearing loss, but also to each of his or her family members. What makes matters even more complex is that it is unlikely that all family members ever experience the same stage of grief at any one time.

Imagine a husband with hearing loss in the depression stage of grief who feels that life is not worth living and so is reluctant to consider using hearing aids or ALDs let alone seek emotional help. Now consider that man's partner who may be in an earlier stage of anger. On the surface she may seem angry that her partner won't help himself by going to an audiologist, but in reality is probably angry that she has lost her hearing spouse who once was much more supportive; emotionally and perhaps otherwise. Finally, imagine that the couple has a teenaged child who is in the even earlier stage of denial. The teenager seeks to protect herself by denying that the problem exists. This however, is not the end of the dilemma. Real healing cannot take place until the family comes to realize that each person's stage is likely impacting the other persons'. Many families attempt to maneuver through their staggered grief responses over a period of years and even decades; sometimes without resolution. Imagine a single family automobile where each family member has his or her own steering wheel, accelerator and brake as the family attempts to drive down life's highway and you get a picture of confusion, chaos and lack of direction.
There is however, good news about this family or compound grief. In fact, the good news is the same as the bad news: Each person has an impact on the other person's ability to manage their individual stage of grief. Things tend to go wrong when each family member attempts to manage each stage on his or her own. On the other hand, with the appropriate outside intervention, the family could learn to manage the familygrief by considering each other member's specific stage and understanding how each person impacts every other person in the family.

The secret to managing family grief is to develop an overt language of expressing thoughts and emotions to one another; to learn to 'talk about talking'. Each family member likely experiences the impact of hearing loss in different ways. For this reason, it is important to encourage each family member to explore and share how the grief of hearing loss has affected them. Though each might feel alone in the family or relationship, it's important to recognize that there IS common ground; even if it is the common ground of feeling jolted out of their pre-hearing loss family roles. Talking about grief responses is even more important in the case of hearing loss because as stated earlier, hearing loss directly impacts communication in ways that are unlike other kinds of loss or emotional trauma. While some families naturally learn to discuss and resolve their compound grief, many do not. In such cases a family therapist can help people with hearing loss and those living with someone with hearing loss, navigate the waters of hearing loss-related, compound grief.

What is an Implantable Hearing Aid and When Would You Get One?

What is an Implantable Hearing Aid and When Would You Get One?

Implanted hearing aids amplify sound and transmit the vibrations through the ear. They are a good option for people who are hard of hearing (who do not have a profound hearing loss) and cannot use hearing aids. They are also useful for people who prefer not to have a visible hearing device outside their ear.

The two types of implantable hearing aids are either surgically implanted or non-surgically implanted. The surgically implanted hearing aid is a device which is implanted either in the bone or in the middle ear. Most implantable middle-ear devices almost completely eliminate feedback, one of the most annoying problems with conventional hearing devices. Some devices may allow the patient to continue "hearing" while swimming or bathing.

Cochlear implants provide sound perception by using an electrode which is surgically implanted into the cochlea (the spiral cavity of the inner ear). Patients must meet strict criteria in order to qualify for a cochlear implant.

Auditory brainstem implants are designed for patients who have hearing loss because of tumors. Often the tumor is removed in the same procedure where the ABIs (auditory brainstem implants) are implanted. These implants can be used on patients 12 years of age or older, and no hearing criteria is required. A study of 61 patients receiving the ABI showed that the device is effective and safe in most patients. It helped to improve the lip-reading abilities in most patients and a few were able to understand speech.

Bone-anchored hearing devices have been used in Europe since 1977, and more recently here in the United States. A microphone in the processor vibrates the bone in the skull and the sound is transmitted to the inner ear. The FDA has approved this device for children 5 years of age or older; but in Europe, younger children have used it successfully.

Some non-surgically implanted aids are implanted under the skin and others are inserted into the ear canal. When inserted into the canal, they can be worn for months and then removed or replaced when the batteries wear out. Some people find these to be uncomfortable simply because they do not like having an object in their ear canals.

Implantable hearing aids provide sound which is more natural and clearer than traditional hearing devices. Speech is more easily recognized, and a remote control makes the device convenient to use. Implanted hearing aids give patients the freedom to swim, shower, and live a more active lifestyle.

Cure For Tinnitus - Can Ear Wax Cause Tinnitus Hearing Loss?

Cure For Tinnitus - Can Ear Wax Cause Tinnitus Hearing Loss?

Ear wax is a likely possible cause of tinnitus hearing loss if the condition is deemed severe. While more than half of the cases are mild and can be easily treated, there are also cases that ear wax have caused permanent damage to the cochlea, giving rise to ringing in the ears. The temporary cause is not difficult to treat as cure for tinnitus and you will soon enjoy the blissful sounds and noise around you again. The permanent damage may be more difficult to manage.

This is a condition where you hear sounds in the ear without the presence of any actual external sounds, which could include buzzing, roaring, whistling or ringing in the ears. Ear wax accumulation is the most common cause of the buzzing yet most easily neglected aspect of personal hygiene. If you should find this symptom happening to you, you should seek the advice of a professional physician instead of scraping your ears with swaps, hairpins, or any hard objects.

While ear wax is common as cause of tinnitus hearing loss, it is often not permanent.

Excess ear wax becomes a cause of the disorder when it partially blocks out external sounds, thereby amplifying subtle noises within the ear canal. This gives you sensation of the buzzing or ringing in the ears. If ignored, it can subconsciously become serious anxiety and stress issues subsequently and even give rise to sleepless nights.

Another cause is wear wax cleaning itself. we often practise ear cleaning, which is good personal hygiene if done on a regular daily basis. But if you wait till the disorder arises to start cleaning your ears you have waited too long as self cleaning of ear wax can give rise to complications due to hard scraping, hurting the inner ear and the cochlea which can be permanent damage at times.

Hence, ear wax might seem a small issue to you as a personal hygiene to upkeep, extreme care must be taken to find the cause of tinnitus hearing loss, so that the correction treatment can be effected. Your first step should be the Ear Nose Throat specialist who will give you a proper diagnosis and possibly a good ear cleanup. Thereafter you will need to follow a holistic cure for tinnitus treatment encompassing a healthy lifestyle, enhanced diet and vitamin regime, regular exercises and stress management. This should ensure that ear wax induced tinnitus hearing loss does not recur again.

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss, typically abbreviated SSHL, is a frightening problem that hits about 4,000 people each year in the United States. It is an affliction that doctors still don't quite understand, as there are over 100 things that can cause sudden hearing loss. Even then, some people who are struck with SSHL never do find out what caused their problem.

SSHL is technically defined as a loss of hearing that reduces your hearing abilities by more than 30 dB, spanning at least three contiguous frequencies. This loss can happen either suddenly or over a span of about 72 hours. While SSHL usually only strikes one ear, some people have reported the unexplainable deafness in both. With this type of hearing loss, a person might also experience tinnitus and/or dizziness.

Most people say that they wake up to discover that they are deaf in an ear. Others do not notice the change until they try to use one ear alone, like listening to the phone. Even more rarely, some people hear a "pop" noise before suddenly losing their hearing. People can recover from SSHL just as suddenly, with some undergoing a spontaneous recovery without medical intervention within three days after the strike. Others only have to wait a week or two before their hearing is restored, although 15% of sufferers of SSHL never recover and actually get worse.

In looking for the probably cause for the hearing loss, doctors may interview you about your past health issues or any injuries you might have sustained. Only about 10-15% of SSHL sufferers can determine what might have hurt their ears, which may include:

Infectious disease or virus

Loss of blood circulation

Toxins like chemicals or snake bites

Head or ear trauma

Birth defects or abnormal tissue growth

Immunological or neurological disorders

Because so little is known about the cause of SSHL, doctors do not have an exact method to fight the problem. They do, however, recommend to visit a physician immediately because research has shown that the quicker the treatment, the better. After asking you about medications or experiences that may have caused the deafness, a doctor may ask you to discontinue a possibly harmful medicine. Usually, a healthcare professional will prescribe steriods, which help reduce inflammation and promote immunological strength. These can help with the SSHL if it is infection or virus-related.

Sadly, sometimes doctors cannot help with the SSHL. Thus, to stay active and able to hear, many people turn to hearing aids. Studies have shown that bone anchored cochlear systems tend to have the most success with people with SSHL, although there are a number of other hearing aid devices that can help with the deafness.

Beltone Hearing Aids

Beltone is one of the leading manufacturers of hearing aids. They are known for the quality of the product and equipped with standard components. The founder of this product is Sam Posen in the year 1930.

They have a large network of distributing the hearing aids around the worldwide. There are variety of models and designs available that match the market with their up to date technology. The recent one is "Beltone touch hearing aid". They manufacture each aid with utmost care and show notable variation using their new innovative technical ideas.

They produce different varieties of equipments including products like Oria, Invisa, Opera plus, D71, and P77 which are the well known products of this brand. Invisa and Opera Plus belong to the type of completely-in-the-canal (CIC), they are very small in size and it is a best example of trendy model. The ability and strong amplification is higher in Opera plus than the Invisa.

They also have Behind-the-ear aids (BTE) which is found in D71 and P77. With the excessive technological advancement they have recently introduced a product called Oria. This is a BTE device with high digital series and has a dual mic which gives more importance to the amplified speech sound. They can also decrease the volume of noisy atmosphere and make the person hear without any hindrance.

Any noise or unwanted sounds will make the person feel more embarrassed. But these products suppress the interference and feedbacks, which were troublesome in analog aids. They can correct the noise automatically and adjust the sound according to the environment. Avoiding this interference makes the person to hear more clearly and naturally.

Another new product is "Beltone Change Hearing aid". They appear very small compared to all the models of In-the-Ear (ITE) aid and they have a distinguished hearing capacity. The function of this product is like completely-in-the-canal (CIC) aid. High quality sound is most remarkable. They also decrease the irrelevant noises. Available in different style, size, color, essential quality, advantages and range each model is specially designed to suit each individual's needs.

Causes and Symptoms of Central Hearing Loss

Causes and Symptoms of Central Hearing Loss

Many people do not know is that, whether children, adults or aged, central hearing loss is rare though there are people who suffer from it. There are certain causes and symptoms of this problem thus it is necessary that you get acquainted with them so as to detect and seek the necessary medical steps when you discover that you have this problem.

This hearing impairment results from brain pathway or auditory nerve damage, brainstem lesions is also another cause. Patients with this impairment are often misdiagnosed because of inconsistent auditory behavior in that they may respond to environmental sounds and exhibit no reaction when it comes to sudden loud sounds.

There are several causes of this impairment like bilateral brainstem lesions which is also known as tumor, brainstem structures damage, right sided temporal lesions and head trauma. As much as there are other causes, these are known to be the major causes of this disease.

There are several symptoms when it comes to central hearing loss, it is therefore imperative that you understand some of these symptoms so as to detect if you or any other person is suffering from this disease. The major symptom is word deafness. This means that those patients suffering from this impairment do not experience any difficulties when it comes to speaking though they may exhibit problem when it comes to word comprehension.

Auditory hallucination is also another symptom of this impairment which may lead to misdiagnosis of psychological difficulties like schizophrenia. Patients with this problem also find it hard to recognize nonword stimuli like when a phone rings (auditory agnosia) or when playing music (amusia). Sudden hearing loss is also one of the major symptoms of this impairment. As much as patients with this problem may react to environment sound, they consider themselves deaf.

Surgery or medication is not a remedy when it comes to treating this impairment thus the focus should be based on preventing it from progressing. This is because this problem is always misdiagnosed as psychological disturbance which might not be the case and instead may inflict more hearing problems. It is therefore advised that you have to take your child and even yourself for ear check up most often to detect if this problem exists.

Music, Musicians and Hearing Loss

Music, Musicians and Hearing Loss

Whether you're a musician or just a music lover, playing your music too loud on a regular basis can cause hearing related problems. For example, if you're one of those people who like to drive around in a "boom box car" with the music up full blast you should consider turning the music down quite a bit. Those "boom box cars" can generate up to 130 decibels of sound, which is very near if not over the human hearing pain threshold. A typical value for this threshold of pain is 120 decibels. To put things into perspective, a soft whisper is about 30 decibels while a train is around 100 decibels. The average rock concert is around 120 decibels, which is right at the pain threshold. On a personal note, I wear earplugs to every concert I attend as a precaution, since prolonged exposure to sound pressure levels in excess of the threshold of pain can cause physical damage, potentially leading to impairment. It's important to keep in mind that hearing-induced loss is permanent.

Hearing impairment is measured by the amount of level of loss in what are called decibels (dB) hearing level (HL). Decibels are like degrees of a thermometer. As temperature increases, so do the number of degrees. As the volume of sound increases, so do the number of decibels. A normal conversation will usually range between 45 and 55 dB. A baby crying falls around 60 dB and busy downtown traffic can be almost painful at 90 dB. If you can hear sounds between 0 and 25 dB most of the time, your hearing is pretty normal and you most likely don't need an aid, although it could enhance your abilities in some situations. If you only hear sounds above 25 dB HL, your loss may be mild, moderate, or severe. These terms will be discussed in more detail in the next paragraph.

Hearing loss can be basically categorized in four ways: mild, moderate, severe, and deaf. Mild loss is considered to be a loss up to 40 decibels, which will usually lead to trouble in hearing ordinary conversation. Moderate hearing loss is a loss of between 40 and 60 decibels. This usually means that voices must be raised for the impaired person to hear them. Severe loss, which is loss over 60 decibels, would require that people shout for the impaired person to hear them. According to the World Health Organization, the term "deaf" should only be applied to individuals with impairment so severe that they cannot benefit from sound amplification or hearing aid assistance.

Even the slightest loss of hearing can make life difficult. Although conversation is audible at low frequencies which usually means the deeper voices, it's much more difficult with higher pitched voices. This is because with typical loss, the ability to hear high sounds is the first to go, which means it will be harder to hear birds or women's voices. As the problem worsens, the loss of the lower tone reception soon follows.

A major problem with hearing loss is that 90% of the time the loss is so subtle and gradual that people don't always notice it until it's too late and some loss has occurred. Additionally, musicians most likely suffer from not just hearing loss but also have ringing in their ears and pitch-perception problems, which might cause them to inadvertently play a C sharp note instead of a straight C. Some musicians, especially those who start out young such as violinists, start losing their hearing as early as the age of 10.

Many musicians now use ear monitors to keep down the levels of sound they absorb on the stage while performing, he said. These monitors look like little hearing aids with wires attached to them and they enable each musician to precisely control how loud it is in their ear. Oddly enough, it has been found the musicians who play classical music have a greater significance of hearing loss than do rock musicians. This is based on the fact classical musicians have a tendency to play more concerts, teach several hours a day, and then practice several hours a day so in most cases they put in more hours than do rock musicians.

Music lovers should moderate in the length of time and level of loud music to which they expose their ears.

How to Avoid the Major Causes of Hearing Loss

How to Avoid the Major Causes of Hearing Loss

Whether it's the job you work at or the things you like to do in your free time, there are a number of everyday activities which have a major impact on your hearing capabilities. The ability to hear will gradually decline in every human being, but the levels of loss can vary greatly. Doctors have recognized a sharp increase in hearing problems in recent times, which some studies have linked to the ubiquitous use of headphones. In addition, rock musicians and fans are always experiencing auditory issues at a young age. While changing a lifestyle is not always realistic, it is important to know the major causes of preventable hearing loss. Here are five ways to preserve your ears.

1. Follow your instincts. The easiest way to know that your ears are being damaged is to trust your instincts. If you notice a sound which is causing your ears to become uncomfortable, try to remove yourself from the situation or address the cause itself. Your ears will always guide you through the process.

2. Protect yourself at work. There are a number of jobs which can damage your hearing every working day. Anyone who is operating machinery should wear earplugs or noise-reducing headphones for protection. Even jobs which have occasional instances of loud noise can cause a decline in the ability to hear. Firefighters, for example, will only experience loud sirens during an emergency, but the impact on the ears can be permanent.

3. Be smart when you go to concerts. A love of music is never something to be ashamed about, and the best way to experience music is to see and hear a band play live. Yet, so many rock 'n roll fans end up having trouble with their ears at a young age. When you go to a show, bring along some ear plugs in case you are right next to the speaker system at a club. While some loss is inevitable over time, you can limit the damage.

4. Remember the direct impact of headphones. Trying to relax and listen to music on the way to work is more common than ever these days. iPods have made it easy to keep vast libraries of music on a small device. However, remember that the direct impact of these earplug headphones is even more intense than the old-fashioned models. While you may feel the need to raise the volume to compete with street traffic sounds, it can hurt your ears.

5. Avoid large crowds. While in the midst of a large crowd, you may notice only the sounds from your immediate environment, but there is a cumulative effect the larger mass of people is having. Try to limit your time in large groups of people, or at least give yourself the opportunity to take a break when you have to be around crowds for extended periods of time. You may end up doing wonders for your hearing.

What You Can Do to Prevent Hearing Loss

What You Can Do to Prevent Hearing Loss

Older Americans are becoming more aware of health issues as they age. Normal things that we take for granted like good eyesight and hearing is becoming more challenging as our bodies continue to degrade. In essence, as we get older we need to be more aware of ways to prevent things that can cause issues down the road.

One of the areas we took for granted as teenagers and young adults was our ability to withstand loud noises at events like rock concerts or playing our music so loud the car next to us could feel the vibrations. This continues today with the younger generations and is even more common with the use of iPods and Cell phones.

The world is getting louder and our ability to endure extreme noise levels over many years will eventually catch up to us and future generations. Loud music, machinery and other high volume sounds can contribute to a person's loss of hearing.

There are two basic types of hearing loss; conductive and sensorineural.

Conductive hearing loss is defined as hearing loss due to an obstruction in the ear. This obstruction can be earwax, or a foreign object of some sort that is preventing the sound from reaching the inner ear.

Sensorineural hearing loss is usually more permanent as the nerves in the inner ear are damaged and unable to function properly. Damage can occur through excessive noise or medical conditions attributed to high blood pressure or diabetes.

Common sense and a person's awareness to their environment is crucial in preventing damage to their hearing through external noise levels. Here are some things you can do:

o Lower the volume - Music and TV are common devices that can over time become detrimental to our hearing. Instead of increasing the volume on your plasma, install a surround sound system that can provide a rich sound experience without increasing the volume to damaging levels

o Where earplugs or headgear if working around loud machinery. Noise levels coming from lawnmowers can be just as damaging as manufacturing equipment

o Do not use foreign objects to clean your ears. A cotton swab can push material back toward the eardrum and inner ear. Ear canals can be cleaned with normal bathing routines.

Although the list is not comprehensive, do not wait until you are having issues before taking action in trying to prevent long term hearing loss as it may be too late. Boomers are living longer, but their ability to communicate and understand others will be impacted as they deal with permanent loss of their hearing. Overexposure to loud music, mega movies in the theater and loud machinery have become a part of our daily lives and the more aware of our surroundings, the better prepared we are in preventing issues like hearing loss.

How You Can Prevent Hearing Loss In Young Children

How You Can Prevent Hearing Loss In Young Children

Hearing loss or deafness occurs when a person suffers from partial or complete loss of hearing. One can either be deaf right from birth or develop the condition later in life. There are many factors that can render one deaf. These factors include;

• Genetics

• Pre-natal illnesses

• Substance or drug abuse by a mother during pregnancy

• Prolonged exposure to loud noises

• Injury to the head area or directly to the ear

• Childhood diseases

• Aging

• Illnesses and infections affecting the mother while pregnant

• Children born with low birth weight

• Children who suffer from jaundice

People suffering from deafness usually have to learn how to use the sign language. This makes conversation easier between deaf people and those who do not suffer from the ailment. In some cases, people suffering from hearing loss also suffer from blindness. If deafness is observed and treated during the first three months of life, then chances of a complete recovery are greatly increased. It is now recommended that children should get their hearing tested before they leave the hospital after birth. Follow-up screening and tests should be done on a regular basis. These tests check for fluid behind the eardrum or for a hole in the eardrum.

Most hearing loss cases can be prevented in children. The first and biggest responsibility usually falls on the mother. This is because, some of the causes of deafness are as a result of the mothers conduct during pregnancy. For example, it is only the mother who can decide to avoid taking harmful drugs during her pregnancy. Loud noises should not be made near young children. This can be done through the use of protective gear such as headphones which are devised to keep noise levels to acceptable decibels.

In addition, children should be advised to keep the volume down when watching television or when listening to music. They should also be made to take breaks from these devices so that their ears can take a break. To prevent head injuries from some sporting activities, protective gear such as helmets should always be worn. This is particularly important during bicycle rides and horse riding. For very small children, care givers should avoid falls that could result in serious injuries. Children should also be discouraged from putting items in their ears such as seeds, sticks and beads. These could also cause damage to the eardrum if pushed in too deep.

Ways to Prevent Hearing Loss

Ways to Prevent Hearing Loss

One may argue that all five sense - taste, touch, smell, sight, and hearing - have equal importance in our lives, but it is certainly true that without the ability to hear we can miss out on so much. To be able to enjoy a conversation with friends, experience a movie or play, or listen a child's laughter is an incredible blessing for which we should all be thankful.

Sadly, there are instances where people lose the ability to hear due to illness, genetics, or injury. Some cases of hearing loss simple cannot be helped, but there are times where hearing loss results by a person's neglect of hearing health. Thankfully, these situations can be prevented if one knows what steps to take to prevent damage to the ears.

If you wish to preserve your hearing ability for years to come, and wish to enjoy every sound and melody that comes into your life, here are a few suggestions to help you.

Protection: Particularly if you work in areas of loud volume, like construction or aviation, you want to be sure you are using effective ear covering at all times. Work-related hearing loss is fairly common, and if at any time you experience headaches or discomfort as a result of working in such an environment, consult a physician.

Limitation: In this age of portable phones and MP3 players, it is not unusual to see people walking around with tiny earplugs in one or both ears. Indeed, the use of ear buds and cell phone headsets help cuts down noise pollution, but overuse of these items can be damaging to your ears. Try to limit how often you blast your favorite music into your ears, especially if you want to continue listening to it in the future.

Isolation: Every once in a while, whenever possible, give your ears a rest and seek out a quiet place for meditation or relaxation. Listen to your body rather than the rest of the world. Read a book, do a crossword puzzle, and enjoy the silence.

By taking care of your hearing now, you can preserve this wonderful gift throughout your life and enhance your other four senses with a better appreciation for sound.

Two Categories of Hearing Loss

Two Categories of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss normally occurs when someone is 20 years old. This hearing disorder comes periodically. At the first time, someone might have light hearing loss. But if it is not treated, this disorder will be heavier that will make you get the difficulties in hearing any sound.

There are many causes that cause this hearing disorder. In this case, those who have this hearing disorder are divided into two categories. The first category is Conductive Hearing Loss (CHL). This occurred when there are mechanical problems on the outside and the middle ear. 3 cartilage (small) and middle ear (ossicles) might fail to make the Cochlea or ear drum vibrates in responding to a certain sound.

Another category is Sensoryneural Hearing Loss (SNHL). This occurred when there is dysfunction in the inner ear. In this category, the nerve hair (cilia) that transmit sound to the ear is injured or damage. This hearing disorder is also usually called as nerve damage.

However, if you have this hearing disorder that include to one of those categories, you might find that CHL usually can be cured but SNHL cannot. Additionally, there are also some people who have both of those two categories. In this matter, the hearing disorder that they have is called mixed hearing loss.

To prevent this, it is highly recommended to do the testing for hearing for newborn babies. When there is a problem of hearing in a newborn baby, this might cause the development of speaking of that baby slow.

As stated before, there are many causes of hearing loss. One of them is ear infection. This usually occurs in children. Ear infection can cause temporary hearing impairment. When there is fluid that is remained in the ear, this can cause ear infection. Although this fluid can go out without realizing it, this can cause hearing disorder. Thus, you have to be aware when there is fluid in the ear for 8-12 weeks. For the safe, it is better for you to get it out immediately.

Hearing Loss - Two Categories of Hearing Loss

Baby Boomers Hearing Loss is Evident

Baby Boomers Hearing Loss is Evident

you familiar with the phrase 'The Baby Boomer Generation'- BBG? These are Americans born from 1945 to 1964.Studies prove this generation is likely to be affected by hearing problems more than those born beforehand. At fifty one years of age, the former President of the US, Bill Clinton, one of BBG had to use a hearing aid. As many 'baby boomers' reach their forties and fifties they notice changes in their hearing. This takes the form of needing raised volume on televisions, asking others to repeat words and difficulty in hearing over the phone. Numbers suggest about thirty eight million members of the baby boom generation have damaged hearing. It is commonly accepted that as we get older hearing can become weaker. But this figure is far too high. The question is why is it is so?

It cannot be overlooked that the modern world we live in is indeed a lot more noisy than before. This has been affected by the advent of heavy machinery, planes, cars and many more new inventions. Because of these inventions the workplace changes rapidly in a short time. For example, factory employees get used to the constant noise levels and their health suffers. Another consideration is lifestyle. Younger generations have enjoyed loud music and motorbikes. Our great grandparents did not listen to bands like White Snake at ear splitting levels or the revving up of a Harley Davidson. How Noise Can Damage Your Hearing

How Noise Can Damage Your Hearing

Sound is something that we experience almost every time in our day to day life. It could be someone speaking or the sound of a vehicle or clattering of things. Almost everything that we do makes a sound but of varied intensities, although, there is a vast difference between sound and noise.

When we hear sound, it may not necessarily harm our ears, but a sound of very large intensity does. This is called noise, and if exposed to it for a long duration, will affect our ears very badly. Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is caused when the sensitive structures in our inner ear gets damaged to exposure to noise for a long time.

NIHL usually happens when we are exposed to intense noise levels for a prolonged period. A sound intensity of over 85 decibels is likely to cause a problem whereas a sound intensity of below 75 decibels is generally considered safe. Noise made by motorcycles, firecrackers and small fireworks with a sound intensity ranging from 120 to 150 decibels are the usual causes for NIHL. Apart from this, a onetime exposure to an intense "impulse" sound such as an explosion may also cause NIHL.

It is very important to keep a check on the noise levels that one is exposed to, as that is the primary cause for such problems.

Prolonged exposure to harmful sounds may result in the damage of hair cells as well as the auditory or sensory nerve. Impulse sound may also cause the same along with immediate hearing loss which may be permanent. Such hearing losses may be accompanied by tinnitus, which is a ringing or a buzzing sound in the ear or head. This may or may not subside over a period of time and may occasionally occur. If a person regains his hearing, the temporary loss of hearing is called a temporary threshold shift. This may subside within 16 to 48 hours to the exposure to sound. One should regularly use ear protectors or ear plugs to prevent exposure to continuous noise.

Over a period of time, if the sound a person hears becomes muffled, distorted or has difficulty in understanding speech, is the first symptom of NIHL. These symptoms may gradually increase over a period of time. People at times may not be aware of the problem they are going through, but hearing loss can be detected by means of hearing detectors. People of all ages, from infants to the aged are vulnerable to NIHL. Recreational activities like target shooting, hunting, snowmobile riding, woodworking, playing in a band and attending rock concerts, all put you at a risk of developing NIHL. Noises at home that may come from lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and shop tools may also prove harmful.

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) researches the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of NIHL. Damaged hair cells, which do not grow back in humans and other mammals, are the primary cause for NIHL. Researchers have now identified some of the many genes important for ear development and hearing. They have also been studying the possibility of using gene therapy to re grow hair cells in mammals.

AS is a serious disease that affects the kidneys. But as mentioned above, AS also affects the inner ears and eyes because the type IV collagen proteins are vital in the function of your eyes and ears. AS mutates the type IV collagen and causes these side affects. The most tell tale sign of AS is hematuria, or bloody urine. In infant boys hematuria is usually always present while hematuria in girls comes and goes. In infants, hematuria might also be different colors; pink, brown, and red.

AS may often be the cause of deafness. In most cases the boys that are affected by AS develop deafness at an early age, usually around the time of adolescence. This deafness usually pervades both ears. But hearing aids can help remedy the situation and allow for the victim of AS to be able to hear again. Girls usually do not develop complete deafness and if they do it is usually at an older stage in their life, sometimes girls do not develop noticeable symptoms until adulthood.

Kidney transplants, although it will help with longer lifespans, it will not improve the person's hearing.
